Modem and ISP compatibility

I hope this is the correct forum for my questions.

I have ADSL and currently I am using an Efficient Networks 3020 Internal modem. I spoke to a tech from my ISP about buying a better modem and he told me that not all modems would be compatible with my ISP's setup/equipment. Is this true? I was under the impression that one wasn't limited to the modem one could use according to the equipment the ISP used.

If it is true, what do I need to find out from my ISP concerning their equipment? At the moment, they sell the only ADSL modems in this country and they are the only ISP.
I want to buy a Cayman modem/router when I come home to the US for the summer. Could someone please shed some light on this.

Thanks.
