modding SC-420 PCI-E slot to take video card

I'm planning on cutting up my SC420 this week using this method.

However, I've never really done a hardware mod before, and I feel like this one isn't a great place to start. So, before I go out and buy a blowtorch (people flip when I tell them I'm buying a blowtorch to fix my computer) -- does anyone have any suggestions? Examples might be:
"You're an idiot!"
"Leave the computer alone!"
"You'll be fine"
"here's this better method that won't fsck up your computer"

...anything like that?

thanks

I've seen a few people do this, never seen it done with a blowtorch before but, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

On another note, could you not just buy a 16x slot, unsoldier the dell 8x slot and soldier on the 16x slot for a much cleaner mod?

I didn't know that FoxConn (or any other slot manufacture for that matter), sells individual slots to end users...

Yeah, that divider didn't look too thick. I wonder why the guy didn't just using nail/manicure scissors to snip them off. I've used mine to cut through plastic model sprues before and they work fine.

I had ask a professional about it, he say it's pretty hard.. some guy at work ruin a 300 dollar mobo (server memory slot) and he said it'll be pretty hard just to replace that slot..

which i thought was easy... but i dont have the skill.. he said it's not straight de-soldering and re-soldering, i would imagine the slot is similar.. but i dont know.. u guys know ?

http://www.motherboardrepair.com/ this guy did the capacitors that exploded and stuff..

thanks for the advice forceshow ... I think replacing the slot itself would be a bad idea. I am going to look into finding a clipper of some sort that will fit in the slot (nothing comes to mind.... even my scissors are too thick). If I can't come up with anything by saturday, it's off to lowes for me O🙂

thanks for the advice guys

I've been reading around different forums of people doing this, and haven't heard of any horror stories. I actually think it would be pretty clean. You're only using the blow torch to heat up your exacto knive anyway. Get that exacto knife hot enough, and I'd bet you're good to go. Just keep the mess to the side without the pins and you can make all the mess you want. Like he said in that guide you posted, he put like a broken peice of ram or something in there to keep the mess from going towards the pin side.

I have an SC420, and am thinking of doing the mod soon myself. I don't think it will be that bad.

I'd just like to point out that 'factory lead time' is how long it will take if you need more than the 141 they had in stock when i made that post.
