well the software part is easy but if you going to play on LIVE you need to have a mod chip and in this case if your not good at soldering get someone to do it for you

Well it would probably be a 1.6 since I would buy it new, and I would also need a hardware chip because I need to maintain the ability to play live. I could probably even do the soldering but its not worth the risk to me.

softmod. Easy, quick(10 minutes), cheap (30 bucks), and the only skill you really need, is to know how to ftp.

IMPORTANT FOR GOING ON XBOX LIVE!!

just because you can turn your mod chip off, doesnt mean you're in the clear.
if you're modding your xbox, you're going to be installing a new hard drive as well. make sure the new hard drive is LOCKABLE. when you turn the mod chip off to go on Live, you have to be able to lock the hard drive as well.

if you're drive is NOT lockable, you will not be able to turn on the xbox with the mod chip off.

pm me if you have any questions.

i'm running xecuter 2.3
with 120 gig hd

and actually its gotten more complicated if your adding a HD. if your going to go online with you box you must fully mod the xbox with your new HD before ever going on live because if you don't do this live will see that you changed your HD and will ban you

But with softmodding, you can still do everything else that a modchip allows, new HD, media center, etc?

go on over too www.xbox-scene thier are some good tutorials thier. but you'll need the following most likely

Action Repaly memory card (or a standard one if you know someone with a modded xbox that can help you get the files you need onto it)
and a copy of MechWarrior or James Bond (real discs)

I have no prior soldering experience, ever. I did mine with no problems whatsoever.

I did a 1.6 using an X3. Wasn't to hard. Just get some flux and it will make all the difference.

M$ is cracking down and they have fouind new ways to find modded xboxes. Turning off your chip and locking your drive is not enough. They are implementing lifetime bans for modded xboxes. They seem to be rolling bans meaning that just becasue you can play live right now dosen't mean your safe. They are even banning people who have only upgraded their HDD.

Modding your xbox is awesome but if you want to play on live, you're better off not doing it. But there are other ways besides live to play online.

I'd highly recommend going ther eto get ALL your questions answered. There's a TON of info on that site.

Also since you haven't bough the XBox yet, I'd definitely buy a used one from EB Games or some place like that. The older ones are easier to mod, they are cheaper, and since you'll be voiding the warranty instantly anyway, no point in spending more for a new xbox.

Also if you aren't great at soldering, you can try to find someone selling an Xectuer 2.3Lite+

It's the best solderless chip out there but they don't make them any more. I used one and popped it in with no issues and it's been working fine ever since.

Also head over to Hot Deals and get one of those 160/200 gig drives from Outpost when they pop up. Gonna need the space for downloading your DVDs to the Hard Drive to make them play faster. Also need a bigger drive for storing the emulators, roms, movies, music, and anything else you put on there.
