alright. please only reply w/ a very specific answer to this question for the benifit of all of us here at anandtech that are not yet sure.

i thought that the plex had one led, sanyo two.. but now i hear that the newer sanyos have only one led as well.

can someone who knows for sure please tell us all exactly how to tell if your iomega branded drive is plextor or sanyo hardware?

thanx.. (i hope this doesnt get locked before the question is answered)

/edit: yes, i did edit the title. and yes, it was most definitely too difficult a concept for both.. plex? sanyo? for 99 bux who cares? but how do you tell? that was the question.

If your opinion of our members is that bad, you can go somewhere else.

LOL...another comment...if you absolutely wanted a Plextor, why did you buy an Iomega? I think I am going to buy a Ford and hope I get a Jaguar.....;)

I bought the iomega because it was 99.00 and 12x with burnproof...
the fact that it truly was a plextor just made it that much sweeter...

Does it REALLY matter?!
They both burn cd's. and for $99, You ABSOLUTELY have NO right whatsoever to complain.

If it's a Plextor, they will keep it. If it's a Sanyo, CompUSA ripped them off, bait and switched, and they will, as a group, sue and try to get something else for free.
Let me start another thread telling everyone that CompUSA Iomega 12X10X32X = Iomega 12x10x32x. That should be the final answer.
BTW, are they allowing repost now? We have the two 256M Micron PC133 posting, three CompUSA Iomega posting, two ATI Radeon 32M DDR.

Amen to that, Kameleon!

Back in the day it MATTERED if a drive was a plextor because you could disc-dupe CDs with plextor readers. Nowadays, IT DOES NOT MATTER ONE FREAKING BIT

You can make perfect bit copies with NERO and any decent CDR. WHO CARES IF IT IS A PLEXTOR?

Exactly... WHY DOES IT FREAKIN MATTER!

They are all good drives. People are wasting $500 time worrying over their $99 drive. It is a great deal, use the damn thing.

Unless the CompUSA ad said it was a re-badged Plextor then they got just waht they ordered, an Iomega. It's not CompUSA's fault that Iomega changed suppliers.

So one quick question...

So iomega discontinued the rebadged plextors and now distributing sanyos? is that correct? meaning you are not able to purchase rebadged plextors anywhere?

the point of a third thread, i had hoped, would be so that people didnt have to search through 12 pages of the first thread to find out if their dirve was plex or not. AND then they wouldnt have to waste their time trying to rename and flash w/ plex it firmware if it was sanyo. unfortunately, that was too difficult a concept for some of you.

<and the second thread was misleading>
<AND someone asked this question in the second thread, and the poor guy was pointed towards the first thread to try to find the needle in the haystack>

From what I understand you have it right. One led for plextors, two for sanyos. Lucky me, only 1 led.

Got mine day before yesterday. One LED, TLA#XXX and manufacture date 1/01. Apparently they are using Plextor AND Sanyo.

If going thru a thread with 600 post is a waste of time, then that someone should consider finding a deal in the HOT deals forum is a waste of time. May be it's too difficult a concept.

try to update the firmware using the hacked program. If it is a plextor, every thing should go ok, if not we will find out what happens..either way its a hot deal..

Got my drive yesterday, 2 Led :(.
First after I install the drive, than I installed Nero 5.0.3.8 and it doesn't pickup the drive. So I uninstall it and install ezcd that came with the drive. It sees the drive. I tried to convert some mp3 into cds. It work out ok. I tried to do a CD to CD copied today, and the damn thing give me errors after it burn half way.

The errors are ASPI error and a FLUSH ASPI error. wtf...the reason I got the drive is cuz I keep on getting buffer underrun from my other cdrw, not this. This totally piz me off. :|

This "Iomega is a Plextor" thing is getting out of hand.

You want a Plextor then get a Plextor.

If you really want "How to tell if your CompUSA Iomega 12X10X32 is a plextor or a sanyo." That topic belongs in "General Hardware Forum". Not "Hot Deal".

You suppose to "Post the hottest prices and deals you've found on the net in the AnandTech Hot Deals forum."

I feel much better now after letting this out....

man. freaking relax and dont bother to click on the topic if you dont care to read it. the topic made it plenty clear what the post was about and i think it does belong in hot deals b/c the vast majority of anandtechers that are gonna have any interest in it will be the ones right here in hot deals. far fewer people would get the relevant information if it was posted anywhere else. and if the knobs who seem to populate this forum had been able to read and had kept this thread to a few useful posts, it would have served it purpose wonderfully. geeze guys. get the sticks outa your @$$....

One LED is a Plextor, 2 is a Sanyo. But when you get a newer one, 1 is a Sanyo, and 2 is a Plextor.
