Mod Pizza - Yay or Nay?

Been here a few times and ordered to go tonight. Overall not half bad.

It's a refreshing change from normal pizza chains mostly because I just absolutely despise the general concept of being stingy on toppings. Normal places just do the whole "3 Topping Pizza" and the point is to overcharge on toppings in general. Then they get even more stingy... If you want to add garlic, it's $1.50. if you want to add more chicken or a meat it's an extra $3.00

At mods they just have a huge array of toppings and you can do whatever you want. Today I got a pizza wo h red sauce, garlic, basil, mozerella, asiago, feta, gorgonzola, spicy sausage, chicken, bacon, ground beef, chorizo, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and more. Topped it off with Mike's hot honey. Not bad for a random experiment of toppings.

Price is flat. Only thing that costs more is if you get a bigger or thicker pizza. Overall I gotta wonder how they are making much profit.

What is ATs thoughts if you've been? Overall I've only been a handful of times, but each time it definetly isn't bad.

Never heard of them, but it sounds interesting. How do you rate the quality compared to the other big chains?

I would say pretty well and above the standards (Dominoes, Pizza Hut, etc) as far as quality of ingredients.

I would put it up to par with Chipotle if that makes sense.

Never heard of the chain. But we have Blaze Pizza which sounds similar. It's similar to Chipotle in that you move down the line and tell them what toppings you want and they top it and bake it. You can add as many different toppings as you want on the pizza.

I haven't been to Blaze Pizza in Atlanta but I did eat at location in San Francisco, and I thought it was pretty good. But honestly, I make really great pizza at home so I don't eat chain pizza other than Costco food court pizza. 18" Costco pizza can't be beat when it comes to value.

I like their thin crust and that they use a real pizza oven. Most of the chain pizza places use a chain driven oven so if you order too many toppings the pizza doesn’t cook properly. Overall good for the money and quick as well.

It looks like we do have several locations of Mod Pizza in Atlanta. Looking at the website, it does look similar to Blaze Pizza in concept. Both aim to be Chipotle of pizza.

Mods pretty ok. A pizza is plenty for me and it isn't bad as long you don't try to go crazy with toppings. It gets real soggy if you do that. Value wise I don't think its that great yet I still buy it sometimes.

I like Pieology better. We had Mod pizza when we lived in Katy and it was just okay.

One main thing I'll caveat that needs to be emphasized. Mod pizza is good as far as overall value. That's probably the point I want to emphasize most. I think their standard pizza is roughly 7.50 or so - and similar to a Chipotle burrito/bowl you can fill it as much as you want.

I'm not saying it's amaaaaaazing pizza. I can find plenty of other greasy delicious ass pizza joints, but those will also charge an arm and a leg. My main point is for overall value while maintaining good quality.

Not really sure why anyone would get chain store pizza. Besides maybe once every two years to remind yourself that chain pizza is just a gross indulgence to get every couple of years to remind yourself why you don't get chain pizza.

Of course I live in northern NJ where some of the best pizza in the country exists within 10 minutes. So I might be biased

I get chain pizza cause sometimes the indies suck, and don't feel like paying boutique prices for shit. I also don't eat pizza every day, so I'm not scouring the state for the best shops. I'm sure there's some good ones around, but I can get a decent pizza for a low cost from a chain when the mood strikes.

Not everyone is blessed with the pizza scene of the tri state area, unfortunately.

You get over the novelty pretty quickly.

Mod, Blaze, and Pieology are all basically the same. You get to choose all the toppings you want at a single price. However the pizzas are small and on the thinnest crust. Pretty much you have to get a pizza for each person. So you pay 10-15 per pizza but if you order 2 you are paying more than you would for a regular large pizza elsewhere.

Like others have said you can get better.

I just wish they had more unique toppings. They all have pretty much the same pepperoni, sausage, and such.

I don't mind Blaze that much, but I also never think of it as something that I want. It's like a 3rd choice if I eat at my first 2 choices way too often.

quality is definitely better than Dominoes, Papa Johns, and those folks, and it's cheap, so worth considering over the generally better local pizza shops that are really quite expensive.

I tried their pizza once, its ok, not bad. Doesnt compare to coal oven or wood oven places, but, it doesn't try to either ...

New Haven CT here so same situation... Wooster st pizza places are on the pricey side when compared to corporate-pies but soooo good!

I had Papa Johns a few weeks ago because it was super-late night and nothing good was open. It wasn't horrible and it WAS cheap but that's about the best I can say!

I hit up Pepe's New Haven every chance I get! The other locations just aren't the same, the pies aren't nearly as good.

Although if you're looking for something a little different than New Haven-style pizza, Zeneli's (diagonally across the street) does pretty good 90-second Neapolitans, plus fresh pasta:

Three brothers own it & are super friendly & really know their stuff. If you like legit Neapolitan, it's one of the best I've had!

I kind of universally love all pizza tho. At an airport & S'barro is there? Yay. Little Caeser's $5 pizza? Gimme. Grade school pizza in a sheet pan? Yes please! 90-second authentic Neapolitan from an oven from Italy? I'll take it! Although New Haven pizza is #1 for me, especially Pepe's New Haven. I'd kill for a Quattro Formaggi right now!

I agree Pepe's New Haven is my favorite crust of all time ... its that massive vintage oven!

The other place I'm very fond of is in West Haven called Zuppardi's ... they have a massive old oven too plus IMO they have the edge on topping quality.

i went to piology and tried to have a bbq Hawaiian pizza, guess what no jalapeno's or bbq sauce. i feel like they lacked so many topping choices, my favorite is just sautéing the toppings my self and the sprinkle it on some freshly cooked pizza bread, add some sauce / cheese / cook it again a tiny bit in a brick oven.

Added to my list! Anything in particular there that is a must-try?

I'm more of a Modern Apizza guy myself. Pepe's in New Haven turned into a tourist trap.

From the title, I thought that we were getting the Moderators pizza. I'm down for that, as long as I can choose the Moderator who gets my pizza!
