MoBo Proglems!!!

OK, here's how it goes.

My computer is a 3200+ winchester, A8N-SLI deluxe and 1GB Corsair RAM.

Yesterday, after playing around in the Bios, my computer would boot, but then re-start when it got to loading windows. So I reset the bios defaults. This didn't work, so I formatted the C:\, and reinstalled win2k. After re-installing it, everything was working fine, until i tried to set-up my network. My onboard network connector is no longer there!!!

I can see the "Marvel" one, but not the one that's part of the NForce4 chipset!!! And since day1 i havent been able to use the Marvel one, due to some sort of driver problem.

I dont remember having any problems with the nForce LAN when i first installed win2k, and i can find the device in device manager.

Any help?! Can this be fixed, i do i need to RMA it?

the obvious would be reinstalling the nforce drivers, and making sure you did not disable the onboard LAN in the bios.

If that doesnt work there is a possibility its really screwed up, but i would try the obvious software/bios issues first.

Well, Im pretty sure it's enabled in bios.
(Advanced>Onboard Device Configuration>Onboard NV LAN>[ENABLED])
(Advanced>Onboard Device Configuration>Onboard LAN BOOT ROM>[ENABLED])

Which Drives do i need to install? Im pretty sure that when i first installed it, win2000 automatically found the correct drivers. And i cant even see the device in device manager.

Also, can anyone with this board plz tell me what the network adaptor appears as in "Device Manager"?.

Thanks
RoD

PS: I CAN see the LAN cable status in BIOS.

Thanks. I'll let you know if it works.

My only concern i that I can't see the nv lan in device manager.

Are there any unidentified devices in your device manager? If there are, then it's a driver problem, otherwise Windows isn't seeing the second LAN controller at all, meaning that it's either disabled in the BIOS or a hardware failure has occured.

My unidentified devices are:
Other PCI bridge Device
PCI Device
PCI Memory Controller
RAID Controller
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

And the only network adapter is:
Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controlled

The Marvell device is diabled, because whenever it is enabled, windows will crash during just before it gets to the log-on screen.

But I'm not sure the device has failed, because:
1)The LAN lights on the RJ-45 socket light up when a cable from the switch is plugged in
2)I can use the bios utility to check the status of the cable plugged into that LAN port.

After installing the operating system on ANY motherboard the first thing IMO you should install are the chipset drivers then all the other device drivers in any order unless the mainboard manufacturer has a specified order. Once the chipset drivers and device drivers are installed everything should show up in device manager.

On the MoBo CD i dont remember any chipset drivers. There were RAID drivers, Marvel Drivers (which dont work!), Audio drivers and a few others, but i dont remember any actual chipset drives. Im pretty sure win2k automatically detected the onboard LAN adaptor.

I dunno.

I bought ASUS because i thought they were meant to be the most stable and reliable. But these problems, along with the chipset fan issue, has made me think of going with ABit/DFI/MSI next time.

The nvidia drivers didnt work? All the unidentified stuff is from the Nforce4 chipset. If the drivers didnt work you should format, reinstall and install them first thing.

I am willing to bet that its just a driver issue.

OK, Im goona try a full re-install. I Guess windows2k must be first, then i should I install the chipset drivers or SP4 first?

It was those b4stard MoBo drivers. I could swear I didn't install them last time.

I downloaded them overnight lastnight, and installed them just now. And whadayaknow, it works!

Well, thanks ppl. Especially twsmit. Thanks Man!

of course it works. it's never the mobo's fault. it's always:

1) OS
2) mobo chipset drivers
3) device drivers
4) service packs
5) other softwares

Onboard LAN BOOT ROM does not need to be enabled. That is used when you are booting from the network rather than the hard drive.

This is good advice. I have seen Intel recommend the service packs be the first thing installed. Ideally they would be slipstreamed into the initial installation. Also I would do windows update before doing other software.
