mobo not recognizing cpu

i recently bought a new amd athlon 2800+ /w barton core for my soyo mobo. it says on the site that the mobo will support up to a 3000+ with 333 fsb. i installed the chip and tried to boot up but it said "unknown chip @ 1250 mhz." it gave me a long beep and then proceeded to shut down. do i have to buy a new mobo, or flash the bios or something to get it to recognize this chip?

i tried to get into cmos but it locks up before i get the chance. what happens is as soon as i boot up, i'll get that beep and my comp will shut down. or, it'll last a little longer to where my mobo is detecting the chip and shows the "unknown chip" message and then shuts down immediately.

i'm a little reluctant to try again because when i put in my older chip, i had a lot of trouble booting up also.

Hi animos1ty and Welcome to the forums!

Sounds like your mobo should work fine with that cpu. Clear the CMOS (bytheway, you guys are confusing the terms CMOS and BIOS) and after booting go into the BIOS and make sure the FSB is set to 166mhz (333mhz is the DDR/ram frequency - you wont find 333 as a choice in BIOS for FSB or cpu frequency).

Your mobo manual will have instructions on clearing the CMOS. And don't panic cuz you're gonna get a warning message after doing so.

Ummm.. Those mobo beeps are telling you something likely important. Have your beep codes handy

Where did you get the cpu (hope it's not Ebay)

Good Luck with it,

Fern

Try clearing your CMOS, either with the jumper or by temporarily removing the battery, and try again.

You didn't say what motherboard you're using. Does it support the 2800+? Have you checked for BIOS updates?

thanks for the welcome. i bought the cpu off newegg. looks like i am gonna try and clear the cmos then pray i can enter bios and change the settings. thanks guys. 🙂

hmm, i was browsing the site and found a bios flash update that will support barton core cpus. i flashed my bios but it still won't recognize the cpu.

The BIOS will recognize the CPU once the FSB is set correctly.
as soon as i boot up, i'll get that beep and my comp will shut down
Check your heatsink orientation (third and fourth photos on this page).

Also, (1) can your power supply handle a 2800+ (post full specs if you want an opinion on that) and (2) do you have an RPM-sensing fan on the CPU_FAN header on your Soyo (if not, then hold down the Insert key on the keyboard before & during power-up, then disable Fan-Off Control in the BIOS).

i set the fsb at 166, i rebooted and then it said "unknown chip @ 1666 mhz" and then it shut off again. i have a 450w ps.

You still didn't say what mobo you have. With some boards, you have to clear the CMOS before or after flashing.

i have a soyo sy-kt400 mobo. i flashed my bios twice and no go. once without clearing cmos and once clearing cmos.

What brand & model is the 450W PSU, and did you check your heatsink orientation and the Soyo FOC function like I mentioned?

Could the processor be at fault here? Have you, or are you able to try the processor in another working mobo so you can elminate the CPU as the cause of the problem?

That sounds plain weird! Your CPU has a multi of 12.5 (and is locked). So how in the heck can a FSB 166 x 12.5= 1666mhz?
