Mobo frying my HDDs?

note235

For my second rig I have a MSI P67A-G43 with an i3 2100. And when I booted it up it fries (literally--the HDD smokes) my HDDs. It posts and everything but I'm not sure what the problem is? Its the second drive I've put in. The PSU is a corsair 520hx that was working perfectly fine and the memory is a pair of supertalent 4GB sticks at 1.5v.

The mobo does not supply any power to the HDD except for very low signal voltage -
I would look at the power connector coming from the PSU ..

This. SATA power connectors are high density and very easy to cross pins at the slightest angle. Make sure the plastic moulding on the sides of the power and data cable connectors aren't fighting each other. This is the most common cause of smoked drives.

How long ago did you get your MOBO? If I remembered correctly, Sandy Bridge MOBOs were recalled due to the Intel SATA controller frying or killing SSDs and HDDs...

You don't remember correctly .... ( respectfully )
The problem was/is the controller chip no longer communicating with the HDD's .. There was no danger to the drives themselves ..
