mobo dead??

I have an old Abit socket 939 AMD board and I think it just died. I've been trying to get it up and working as my 2nd computer and had windows working, all the hardware working and things were looking good. I installed floppy drive and a 2nd hard drive, plugged the power cord back in and flipped the switch, I heard a "pop" and now the computer won't post. It does the memory check and that's as far as it goes. I can't get into the BIOS. I've tried resetting the jumpers, I even took the battery out but I get the same result. I've unplugged all the hard drives and optical drives but no luck. Is it junk?

Assuming you have more than one stick of RAM try removing all but one stick and booting. Replace with another stick if it still doesn't boot.

Already did that as well, it boots the RAM fine, both sticks of 512 but won't go any further.

It will post but you can't access the bios setup? That's odd. Given your description of the situation, and the fact that you did not mess around with (e.g. flash) the bios, it sounds like a hardware issue. In other words, your motherboards sounds broken. I would advise you throw it out the window.

You heard a pop?

First check the motherboard capacitors. See if any are buldging of blown. If all checks out try a new PSU. Then you may want to run memtest.
