I'm looking to build a system. I have everything else. All I"m looking for is a MOBO and CPU.

I want it to last me awhile and be able to do all the latest software without lagging.
I'd like to have a 64 bit CPU like the AMD 64 2800 but I can't find one for $100. If not something at least as fast in 32 bit.

Any suggestions? Any good places to look?

thanks

Go to pricewatch.com and select the motherboard / CPU combos link. You should be able to get a Sempron 2800+ and a mobo for about 105 shipped.

The cheapest OEM A64 CPU is $99, which leaves nothing for the motherboard. You'll need at least $150 for an A64 rig.

With a $100 limit, you could get a Sempron 2600 and a PCChips KM266 mobo. You'd still need to buy a suitable HSF though.

Semprons have a bit less cache and are just a touch slower then the XP (at least bartons) equivilents. But for the most part they are pretty darn close.

You can get a "refurb" mobo either KT600 or KT880 based on Newegg for under $40 shipped and whichever Sempron you want.
. Newegg's selection isn't as good as it has been in the refurb section, but if I had to buy cheap today, I'd buy this one: Asrock K7V88 for $36. shipped.

. Remember that newegg's 'reeferbs' [sic] are like a box of chocolates... ;) So you may have to wheedle and I/O shield out of them one way or another. Anything else that you don't get, you can download or acquire cheaply.

At least two drawbacks with TD deal - Main one is TD itself - $80 rebate! (guy looking for $100. combo isn't interested in being another $80. out-of-pocket for a couple months (or maybe forever, knowing TD)) - also chaintech mobo lacks the P4-12V connector for CPU power so it will need more PSU than the Asrock.

If you venture into the 150-170 range, you can get a decent Athlon 64 and mobo combo. Otherwise, you should just stick to a Sempron and mobo combo, if you're on a super tight budget.
