Mobo cpu back plate causing short?

I've tried to install a better cooler for my intel 760 but I think the HSF back plate is touching the cpu back plate somewhere and causing a short because the PC tries to start up but stops after a couple of seconds. I have another after market cooler whose back plate doesn't cause the problem. Has anyone heard about this happening?

It's common for capacitor leads to be left fairly long on the back of the board. I always clip them with dikes to prevent contact with the backplate. If it was working before installing the heatsink, that's probably what's wrong.

Gonna have to check that cause I didn't see any. Tried putting electric tape on socket backplate in case the cooler was touching it and that made it last 1 second longer but still wouldn't turn on.

That was the problem. Got some extra washers to raise the HSF plate and its working fine. Thanks again.

Scotch 130C is my weapon of choice, but it's extremely overkill.

Your typical Scotch 33 (or equivalent) will be fine. I build it in a few layers just in case it gets pierced by a solder joint or component though. The 130C is MUCH thicker so less layers are needed but it's also very costly compared to typical vinyl electrical tape.
