Mobo conflicting with case?

I've posted this before but I still haven't quite figured it out yet.

I'm using an Epox 8KHA+, an Athlon XP 1700+, with a generic case and 300w PSU.

The problem is, if I screw in the mobo into the case and plug all the correct things into the correct places, the computer doesn't like to boot up. What happens is, when I switch on the PSU, then push the power button, all the fans and the status light come on for about a second and then turn off. Now when I take the mobo out and push the power button, the system turns on. I have the appropriate standoffs and screws in place, yet somehow the mobo is still conflicting with the case (I think anyway). I still haven't 100% proven that that is the case though. I've wondered if it could be a defective PSU but I can't exactly afford a new PSU and then find out it wasn't the PSU afterall.

I've even placed the sheet that came with the mobo under the mobo in the case so that nothing except the screws are touching the board. The sheet meaning the thing that was placed under the mobo to protect the bottom.

Any ideas?

Try with only the speaker connector and power sw hooked up and see if it comes on. Is your case tray in good condition, not curved in any way. I knew a guy who was having trouble like that and he put electric tape all over his motherboard tray, not saying this is practical or even will work but may. Does all of your studs have a screw screwed in it?

This raises the age old question of whether or not conductive standoffs can cause problems. I've read claims that the brass standoffs can be responsible for system quirkiness and plastic standoffs are a better way to go. I've don't know if this is true or not. It sure seems like case manufacturers would stop providing metal standoffs if it were.

Might want to also doublecheck that there are no standoffs where you're not using a screw.

Would think that many of you runnnig 1.7gig CPUs typically have a more powerful power supply than 300W, but then reading that your PSU is working for 1 second and then shutting off, it could be going into protection mode and you probably have a short somewhere... Check the connectors to all the outputs, perhaps a pin got loose and is touching the COMmon. By twisting the cables, you might have temporarily introduced a short somewhere.

Actually, I do have standoffs without screws in them. I figured they'd be okay to keep the mobo off the case. Obviously, it ain't working.

I am indeed using the brass standoffs. I'd look for plastic standoffs then. I hope that works.

Thanks guys
