Mobo / Chipset Help please!

I plan on building a new budget computer in the near future, and I need some help with mobo and chipset stuff.

I'm pretty sure I need to get AMD... and I want something in the 1.5GHz neighborhood. I see things like Socket A, Chipset 760, etc... and AMD Athlon 1900+ and see that it is 1.6GHz when it lead me to believe 1.9ghz =) I'm just a little confused.

I am going to need a mobo with USB, AGP, SDRAM or DDR, onboard LAN and 5.1/6.1 sound would be nice. And then slap a ~1.5ghz and get things rolling. But I have no idea what the AMD numbers mean and which socket/mobo get. Please advise! Thanks a lot.

An nForce2 MB will have the goodies you're looking for.

They don't have the 2GHz Celeron listed, but you can get a general idea from the CHART.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Another question... a 2.0 GHz Celeron is also in price range, how does it compare to AMD?

you can get a fast XP for the price of a celery and it's gonna be ALOT better for everything. No reason to buy celeron unless you have a mobo and stuff around to use.

EPOX 8RDA + TBred 2100 + SLK 800 & 92 mm fan = overclocking demon for not much $$$. The best combo you can buy price performance ratio period.

8rDA+ ( w/ 6 channel audio and onboard LAN) look appealing... I have a SB Live! card and Altec Lansing 5.1s right now... how will the Realtek audio compare? I'm not a huge audio freak but I listen to a lot of MP3's and play games occasionally.

8RDA+ uses the soundstorm standards, which arguably kicks the Audigy's butt and compares w/ the Audigy2.

The nVidia audio greatly exceeds the SB Live in sound quality and uses much less of the cpu.

Another question: found a good deal on a AT7-MAX2 w/ 6 channel AC 97 audio. Does it also compare w/ Audigy 2 / nVidia audio?

Doesn't come close to nVidia audio.
