Mobo 939 processor upgrade

I am looking to upgrade a little bit of my computer. Right now I have an AMD 4000+ on a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard. I was thinking of getting an Opteron 165 or 180. I think it would work well for how I use a computer. My question is would these processors work with this board? I was also thinking of upgrading to 2 gigs of ram. How much performance would I get out of upgrading to one of those processors and doubling my ram to 2 gigs? Thanks

there's a big difference between a 165 and a 180. I jumped to a 180 on my k8n neo 4 platinum a few months ago and, um, well, that board is no longer with us. I was frustrated that I couldn't get it to over 3 ghz so I tried messing with mobo voltages...oops.

you won't notice any perf gain on single-threaded apps with the 180 vs the 4000+ since they both run at 2.4 ghz. The harder you push the system the more you'll notice the effects of the dual core. realistically you'll probably get another year to 18 mos out of that system by going to the 180. Don't waste the money on the 165 unless you are an experienced oc'er and can get it back to the 2.4 + range. Be careful as the msi boards are notoriously weak oc'ers.

Msi boards weak oc'ers I disagree.

I have the same board he has with a Opteron 170 at 2.75Ghz tho i'm using a custom bios. You just need to know what you are doing!

I would not call myself an experienced overclocker. I have done some in the past but not to the extremes that many on this board have. I have a Thermalright XP-90C with a panaflo 92mm fan. That keeps my current processor pretty cool. So if I do overclock, the cooling I have now should work.

What would be some good tips for a noob overclocker? If I got a opty 165 or 170 and overclock it would my Thermalright XP-90C work be able to take it?

XP-90C is not the best, but is more than enough to cool an X2/Opteron @2.7Ghz.

XP90 works just fine on my opteron 170. its idle is in the 30s with load in the 40s. its overclocked to 2.6Ghz right now...

The XP 90C is a very good HSF. It was one of the best when it first came out.

Don't take my word for it on the msi boards, check out the past few AT mobo comparisons. I bought msi's for many years and had great luck so I never thought to change, but after I had the problem with the k8n I did a lot of research. I never was able to oc much in the past but I always got the cheapest items and was happy with 5-10% oc. I've heard that the newer msi boards are better but I don't see myself going back to them any time soon.

@op get a 3800+ at TD for 59.99 oem and oc that. it's just not worth it to spend the 94+ for one of the opterons on a 939 mobo these days. In fact, if you spent about 120 you could just get a brisbane 4000+ skt am2 and a tforce t550.

i'm not saying you are wrong bryan. I'm just saying that this board was probably the best NForce3 board when released and good overclocker for its time.
