My friend bought this laptop on eBay the other day:

He brought it over here to try playing some BF2 on it, so I hooked him up with ethernet and the ethernet drivers were not already installed. So we took the included driver CD and tried to install the ethernet drivers but they locked up the computer. We had to shut it down and restart and then the ethernet drivers would not install for anything after that. We decided to just reinstall windows after trying everything we could to get it to work.
After reinstalling windows, we used the included driver cd to install all the necessary drivers. After they were all done and the computer restarted, we noticed all the icons on the desktop were garbled, like lines going through them. Every graphical icon in Windows was the same way. On a lighter note, the ethernet driver works now. The ATI driver on the disc was an older version of the ATI drivers, back when the CCC was "Control panel". I figured it was the drivers that were messed up so I went to ati's site and got the Mobility drivers. After installing them, no 3D app would run, the garbled images were gone but nothing would run, and scrolling in IE had a horrible refresh time. After trying every driver we could possibly find, we figured out that the 6.4 Catalyst mobility drivers was turning the slider down in the "Troubleshoot" section in the Advanced Display options. After turning it up, things started becoming garbled again, things started running slow, and 3d apps still wouldn't run. We tried using the old drivers that came on the disc to run BF2.. and it ran. But then after playing for about 30 seconds there would be huge walls of polygons all over the screen and it was just a mess. We really dont know what to do and need some help. Is there some secret to getting the mobility 9600 to run?
Any help will be appriciated. Thanks!
