Mobile Processors

What is the difference between the s478 and s479 Pentium-M? I'm in the market for a laptop, but first I need to brush up on my laptop hardware. Is it jsut the Banias/Dothan difference? Which one does Dell use for their 9300 and XPS2? Thanks

AS far as I know there is no s478 Pentium M Processor. S478 is the socket designated for the Pentium 4 processor (Desktop Series) The Pentium4 Mobile chip also uses this socket I believe, perhaps you have the P4M and the PM Confused?

Anyway, Pentium M = socket 479. Asus makes an adaper which will convert a Desktop Socket 478 into 479 so you can use the Pentium M Banias/Dothan CPU's in a desktop environment. (Again perhaps confusion here?)

If you are looking at a laptop with a Pentium M, generally the best way to tell what type of chip it is is to look at the fron side bus. Generally speaking the older Banias core will have a FSB of 400MHz, while the new Dothan chips sport a 533 MHz FSB. Most modern laptops will have Dothan CPU's.

Confused at all that? Ask any questiosn you may have, or PM me and I'll try to clear it up 😉

Yeah, Banias and Dothan both use Socket 479. You can buy the CT-479 ASUS adapter to run it on the desktop.

The 9300 ships with Dothan. (533MHz FSB parts)

Wow that link confused me some more. There seems to be no correlation between the 478 and 479. So if I decide to get a 2 GHz chip from dell, which socket chip would I get?
