I am in the market for a new Notebook, and I'm getting a bit confused between the available processors. Can someone explain the following (or point me to an appropriate resource):

1. Is there a difference between a Centrino chip and a Pentium-M
2. How do you compare the relative speed differences between a Pentium-M and a Pentium 4. In other words, on average, is a Pentium 4 3.0 twice as fast as a Pentium-M 1.5.
3. What about AMD...How do you compare the relative speed differences between a Athlon XP-M and an Athlon XP.

Thanks

im not much of an intel guy but i think i can help,
intel builds a line of just mobile cpus that are somewhat different than desktops in they must support the ability to dynamicly clock up or down wheras the p4 desktop is not designed or efficient enough to work effectivly or dynamicly in a laptop
amd m cpus are identacle to their desktop cousins they just go through each batch of cpus that come off the line test em and the ones that run at ultra low voltages they call mobile, therefore the only difference between a barton m and a barton is that the m is a much higher quality chip capable of doing the same work with fewer watts. the mobiles are left unlocked in order to be dynamicly settable. there is also cool and quiet and power now incorporated into mobiles "or just enabled most likely"
i beleive that the centrino has incorporated bluetooth and other connection tech that the pentium m does not include
as for the intel cpus i am sure that the mobiles are the cream of the crop and they prob throw out a pile of not good enough centrinos
hope that helps some
