My friend is having trouble with his emails on his iDevices and potentially on Outlook. The short version of it is that the emails are disappearing from his inbox within Gmail app on his iDevices . It is unclear whether they are lost or simply disappear from the view and hidden somewhere else.

He wants to set up his devices in such a way that he can access all his emails at any device, so I told him to check the preference and make sure IMAP is selected in Gmail. That did not help. (according to our conversation over the phone) I am wondering if there are known issues with Gmails and iDevices, and what the best practice is to avoid them.

One thing I am not sure is whether to have him use the mobile Gmail app or use the built-in email client in iOS. Is choice of one or the other can be a source of trouble? I can imagine there are inconveniences of using Gmail app over the built-in email client - One thing I noticed is that you cannot create a new contact from scratch within Gmail app, which is an understandable but difficult-to-accept hurdle for my friend. Am I right on this, and are there other issues foreseeable from using the Gmail app? Or am I wrong and there is a workaround?

I will be visiting him later today so I might have more questions to ask. I figured I should be prepared. My friend is tech-literate enough to know the difference between POP3 and IMAP, so I do not assume his trouble is something trivial.
