Cisco (CSCO, Fortune 500) expects that trend to continue, with mobile data downloads more than doubling every year through at least 2014. By that time, mobile Internet traffic will have grown to 17 times 2010's levels. Over the next four years, total mobile video traffic will expand to 197 million gigabytes -- or about 13 billion YouTube vide

Ouch, healthy growth, but the carriers better not skimp on the infrastructure. Any carrier that does is going to find itself in a whole heap of trouble.

Oh oh, can I make idiotic predictions too?

I'm going to estimate mobile data use goes DOWN by 100x by 2012 due to per-byte billing as carriers' implement it in lieu of expanding infrastructure to ease supposed bandwidth issues.

meh, at these levels of growth you are becoming more spectrum limited than bandwidth limited.

edit: at least in terms of a per cell site instance. There are limitations to what cell sites can do, even within the newer 4G technologies. A Gig-E interface to every site just isn't feasible, since the air interface cannot support those volumes.

I have been in cellular since the Nokia 2180 was the fab phone to have. You're officially the first person I have ever met to interchange them.

Technically, there is such a thing as 197 million Gigabytes, just as there's such a thing as 92,955,887 miles. Its just easier to say 197 Petabytes or 1AU. :p Plus more people are familiar with what a Gigabyte is and how big a GB of data is compared to how many know what a Petabyte is.

I've been in amateur radio for 20 years or so. Bandwidth = spectrum at it's simplest. Always has been, always will be.

Other than carriers spend billions every year upgrading and expanding their infrastructure.

At is simplest that is correct, but there is more to it. All spectrum is not equal and all signaling techniques are not equal.
