I'm thinking about purchasing a mobile barton 2500+ and getting rid of my regular barton 2500+ because it won't do 3200+ or anything close to that. Is newegg still shipping mobile bartons with good stepping? If not where can I get a mobile barton and gurantee the stepping on them? Also finally is it worth it to dump my regular desktop 2500+ for a mobile that will pretty much hit 2.4gHz??? Please give me some opinions because 100 dollars is something I dont want to waste.




 
I'd just save the money for a next-gen system. Even a 2500+ is fast enough for most tasks. Personally, I'm saving up for an AMD64 system in the summer.
 
I agree your 2500 barton will do fine untill next Gen CPU, but if you have extra $ I ordered a 2500 Mobile from newegg got it last week and I am running 2.3@1.6 vcore, the chip boots all the way to 2670 runs rock stable at 2.5 at 1.8 vcore, I run it at 2.3 1.6 so I can shut down fans and have a Quiet PC
 
The 2800+ mobile is available now at HP and may come to newegg someday soon. Keep that in mind when making your decisions.

But you will pay a premium for it. Won't be worth it in my opinion.
 
I wouldn't recommend that change, either. I had my Barton out, working on the bridges (been running 3200+ speed), and used an XP 2200+ running at 9.5*200 (1900 MHz). I really couldn't tell much difference in games. If you play games, I'd put the money toward something like a Radeon 9600 XT or better.
 
It's going to be a few years before I would be able to upgrade again that is why I was thinking about getting a mobile and overclocking it. Do you guys still think I should just hold off?

I also wanted to sell my Barton 2500+ so I would only really be paying for the difference from the Barton sale. Would it be worth that price difference?
 
I'm thinking about doing the same thing, I DO notice a difference in games. A playable difference, UT2004 ONS isn't playable at stock speeds! FPS drops all the way down to 50! I can get my CPU to 2.1Ghz, NOT prime stable, but it runs UT2004 fine, not dropping below 65. That is a HUGE difference. You can't see anything with 50fps and you will die, 65 is playable. I really want 2200Mhz so I have no issues.

In that case, YES! It would be worth it. I had a Barton 2500 that I was running at 215x11 (2365). I had to build a PC for a friend, so I sold him my Barton for $75. I then get myself the mobile 2500 for $100 shipped. The $25 difference is worth it. I"m running my mobile 2500 at 215x12.5 (2685). It won't make much difference in what I do with the PC, but just the fact that I'm running 300+ higher is worth it.

If I'm in your situation, I would upgrade to the mobile. I don't know how much you'll sell your current Barton for, but even if only $50, I'd still upgrade. Especially given your current Barton doesn't overclock much. With the mobile 2500 your odds of hitting 2.5 to 2.6 Ghz is very good. These are the cream of the crop chips picked by AMD to be able to run at low voltages and can withstand higher heat. Plus they're unlocked! What else can you ask for in terms of overclocking?
 
Thank you all for the comments. I think I'm going to take the plunge and get one from newegg.. Newegg still selling good steppings? I have a SLK-947U coming in the mail so this baby is going to run cool 🙂 Does anybody know where I can sell off my regular Barton 2500+ besides the FS/FT Forum?

I don't think there's a bad stepping to be had. Just great, better, and awesome.
 
Just purchased a Barton 2500+moble from newegg (IQYHA 0407) and been running prime95 stable at 2465MHZ on a Abit NF7-S for the last 8 hours with a stock AMD heatsink at 1.7V.
Going to put it in my water cooled case soon to see what it can really do!
Can't see how you can go wrong with these moble Barton 2500+ as they all have been overclocking well.

My situation:
I have an athlon XP 2400+ and I was wondering if it would be worth it to get a mobile 2500+. The reason being that when I run the UT2k4 demo in onslaught mode I often see my fps Dip down to low 30s and the fps meter turns yellow; I'm hoping it's my CPU bottlenecking my system.

So I was just curious to know if it would be worth it to go with the Barton from my thoroughbred (with the whole 512KB L2 cache and quantispeed or whatever else they've done new in the Barton)? Would I expect to see any tangible improvements or should stay with what I got? (I am currently OC'ing my 2400, and of course my intent would be to do the same with the 2500+ were I to get one)

I wont be making any upgrades any time soon... I'm pretty much going to ride this rig out for a while couple years+, with the only exception being a probable CPU upgrade...

I have a ... Well, I think I keep my system specs in my sig. If not I will edit accordingly.

If your ONLY reason for upgrading to the mobile 2500 over your existing CPU is to improvement UT2004 performance, I would suggest that you don't. You will see some performance difference, but I doubt it will be much noticeable. I don't think the additional 256K L2 cache will help that much. Your rig with that video card should be able to handle the game pretty well. Hopefully after the game is released Epic will continue to optimize the codes for performance. I guess it depends on what you do with your current CPU in justifying the price for the upgrade. If you can sell your 2400 then I would upgrade. If you simply going to shell out the additional $100 for the mobile 2500, then I wouldn't.

UT2K4 is a CPU hog. The more CPU you throw at it the faster it will run. But you'll need a good OC from the mobile to get a noticeable difference over what you have now. I know, I've been through a T-Bred 2600 @ 16x133, 2600 @ 11x200, and finally a Barton mobile 2600 @ 11x200. The first upgrade made the most difference, which is where you're at now. The mobile at this speed made some but not enough really to justify the cost. I think I got a dud chip, can't get it much higher without some serious voltage bumps and 2400MHz just isn't do-able at all. I'd like my sytem to last me until the end of the year w/ one last video card upgrade, but it's not going to make it considering UT2K4 performance. That assault level is barely playable. Might try my luck with another mobile chip, but I have to sell some upgrade leftovers off first.

Kind of dissapointing, actually, I expected a little more from my rig.

yeah that system is faster than most people here
haha

i would just wait for new socket/cpu/memory/vid to come out before you upgrade (next few months)
that will change the prices/performance level we've grown to expect over the past few months
