There's that great deal at outpost for the $90 mobo and processor combo

http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4705559

and I'm not sure if it's worth "upgrading" to the sempron 64 as I'm running my CPU at just about 2Ghz right now with 512kb of cache. I'm also in love with my Abit NF7 (I think) mobo so I'm not sure if this is a worthy upgrade or not.

Opinions please....

Sempron 64 will stomp the athlonXP if you overclock it to the same speed. (I don't remember the 3100+ default speed) The sempron 64s should all be palemaro cores (venice basically) so getting it to 2ghz is pretty much a given. I know mine is running at 2.33 on default volts, and I haven't even pushed it all the way. Don't discount the power of that ondie memory controller.

Plus, I'd act now. You can probably recoup most or all of the cost of the upgrade by selling off your socket A stuff. Thats what I did. The upgrade was basically free. But I went with a chaintech board and the 2800+.

The Sempron 3100+ is about as fast as an AthlonXP 3200+ (both on stock frequencies). Not only that, but it's also significantly cooler. I have owned both these CPUs and the difference in heat is huge. On top of this, the Sempron should overclock to pretty high levels.

good points guys but remember this...

It is an XP MOBILE which means cooler running AND a 512MB cache. Please let me know if this changes your opinions.

I'd take the 2800+ in my kid's system@2.4ghz 8x300mhz over the Barton-M 2200+ 35W@2.5ghz 12.5x200mhz any time. Requires significantly less voltage to do the speed, and consequently runs significantly cooler with stock cooling than the 35W did with a SLK800 w/8cm fan.

what model # on the XP-M? with a XP-M you're looking at 2.4ghz-2.5ghz with a good a amount of voltage 1.6-1.8v, plus you'll need a good heatsink to go with it. a Abit NF7 and XP-M make a good combination, but $90 for a 3100 and NF3 mobo is kinda hard to pass up.

Meh, it doens't excite me. I don't see it as a significant upgrade, the abit's a known good quality mobo. Have not heard good stuff about esc mobo's. When I upgrade I'm going to PCIe capable hardware, not another AGP mobo or rig (due to lack of agp upgrades etc)

That said, you'd likley be able to recoup most or all the cost by selling your mobile and NF7.

1.8GHz... I'd go with the Sempron as well... They are far more advanced than the Athlon XP... I mean, integrated memory controller, Cool & Quiet... An amazing overclocking potential as well... The Sempron 64's architecture is much more effective than the AXP's, especially in games...

I wouldn't call it a needed upgrade if your current rig is still up to the task, but PingSpike's advice isn't bad either... S754 can also be your upgrade path to PCIe (not with the combo offered, but nonetheless)... I would consider it...
