Mobile Athlon XP 2600+ on a Shuttle AK32L

Title pretty much asks it all. I currently have a Shuttle AK32L motherboard and I was looking into upgrading the CPU. I currently have a XP 1900+ and saw that the Mobile Athlon XP 2600+ uses a 266 FSB. I have 2 512 meg sticks of crucial pc2100 memory and don't want to upgrade my memory right now. Will this CPU work on my motherboard? I've tried searching on google and here and haven't found anything definitive. If not, what's the fastest cpu i can put on this motherboard. TIA!

You'll have to confirm it, but the 2600+ mobile should work in that board if you don't plan on OC'ing. The mobile chips run at the slower 133 FSB, and PC2100 is meant to run at this speed.

The 266 FSB comes from Double Data Rate (DDR) memory.... 133 FSB x 2 = 266.

I'm not going to be overclocking at all. I called Shuttle tech support and the guy told me that the mobile athlon won't work but he said the fastest cpu I can put on is a 2600+ (which is a mobile athlon )
I told him they're the same socket but I'm not sure if he knew what he was talking about.

I don't think he knows what he's talking about.

The desktop 2600+ that you linked and the 2600+ mobile are physically identical, except the mobile version runs at a default voltage of 1.45v, as compared to 1.65v for the desktop 2600+.

If the board can support a 2600+, then a mobile chip should work fine.

ahhh btw thanks for all of the information I'm leaning towards a mobile athlon now. Are there any advantages over the desktop 2600+? Or is there a site where you could point me towards that I can read up on it? Thanks!

Lemme ask another question. I'm looking at this motherboard since it's on sale. Could I get a barton 2500+ (333 FSB) and use it along with my pc2100 memory? I'm probably going to have to underclock my processor right? My main concern though is that it's faster than my current setup (Shuttle AK32L/xp1900+/1 gig pc2100 memory)

No, a desktop Barton will be slower than your XP1900, if you run it at a 133fsb. If you get a desktop Barton, you're going to have to buy PC2700 memory (or faster), along with a new motherboard.

if you get a mobile barton i suggest you also upgrade your motherboard as well. if you're trying to work within a budget. go for something like a Shuttle AN35N nForce 2 Ultra which is $59 now at Newegg.

ahhh but myocardia's saying that it'll run slower than my current setup if I use the same memory. I can't afford to upgrade my memory right now (wife won't let me )

well you'll have to judge that for yourself by benchmarking your own system. i can only tell you what i've experienced with my own system so far. here are my specs. for this example i'm running a mobile barton 2600+ on an Albatron KX18D Pro nForce 2 ultra board overclocked to 200 fsb x 12 @ 1.775v for 2400 Mhz. i have 2 types of ram onboard; 256 mb x 2 of pc3200 in dimms 1 and 2 and 256 mb of pc2100 in dimm 3 running in dual channel at 133 Mhz for a total 266 Mhz bus. my fsb : dram ratio is 6:4. i decided to throw in the extra pc2100 i had 'cause i needed the additional memory when i play BF1942 which already utilizes a good chunk of my 512 mb of pc3200. so basically the pc3200 memory is underclocked to match the max speed of the pc2100. i then benchmarked with sisoft sandra so it's just a synthetic benchmark but in real world applications like gaming i can tell you that the raw overclock of the cpu makes up for the performance of my underclocked ram.
