You can buy 6 quarts of Mobil 1 at Costco for about $22 or $23. It's the cheapest I've seen it. WalMart wants like $29 for the same 6 pack.

A member of my family works for Mobil in the lubes division and he says I should only change my oil every 10,000-15,000 miles. In fact, I read somewhere that 20,000-25,000 is about where you need to change it with Mobil 1.

Perhaps the synthetic oil will last that long without breaking down, but the filter will definitely need to be changed more frequently! I agree that every 3000 miles is old skool and not necessary.

Well, it took alot of searching (I probably did it the hard way). Anyway, here's how to get the right Mobil1 filter number:
1. Go to http://www.mscdirect.com/
2. In the "Quick Search" field at the top, type "mobil1 filter" and click Go.
3. You should see a list of drop downs -- choose your current filter number from the drop down next to the brand and click View Products

You should see a listing for the corresponding Mobil1 and Hastings (OEM/Fleet) filters...at least it did for me. Obviously you need your current filter number, but if you don't know it off hand, you could go to Fram's website and look it up for your vehicle (this should be the direct link)

"Don't you think the dinosaur remark is said "tongue in cheek"

I actually heard Rush Limbaugh say one day that the oil supply is limited "because it comes from dinosaurs." To top it off, he added "That's why they call it FOSSIL fuel." He was not kidding. As far as I know, he still thiniks this! It's a common misperception for some reason.

As far as the advantage of synthetics, I think the poster prior to this nailed it when mentioning the better lubrication on initial startups, this being magnified by extremely cold weather. This is where the most engine wear occurs.

Nearly everything on the market specifies an oil-change interval around 5000-7000 miles...they've done that since at least the late 70s. The problem is that that interval assumes that you do nothing but highway driving in moderate temperatures. Stop-and-go driving, temperature extremes, etc. are considered "severe service," for which a 3000-mile change interval is typical. Whatever type of driving you do, oil (even synthetic) is cheap enough that you should change it every 3000 miles. It's certainly cheaper than a new engine to replace the one that seized up as a result of too-infrequent changes.

About the only exception would be for a vehicle that's driven on an occasional basis. My '77 Cutlass Supreme has only about 500 miles on it this year, but I changed the oil after six months (about 400 miles YTD at the time).

I'm sure it IS a marketing hype here.

I agree. Either people grew up with older engines and older-generation motor oils that required 3000 mile oil changes, or people grew up watching TV ads and listening to radio commercials from Jiffy Lube and the like that hammered "every 3000 miles" into their minds.

The best thing is to follow your car manufacturer's recommendations. Here is Honda's:
Follow the "severe" schedule (every 5000 miles) only if you drive in one or more of these conditions most of the time:
Trips of less than 5 miles (less than 10 in freezing weather)
Extremely hot weather (over 90 degrees F)
Extensive idling or stop-and-go driving
Trailer towing, driving with a car-top carrier, or driving in the mountains
Muddy, dusty, or de-iced roads

Following the "severe conditions" guidelines won't help your Honda unless you really do drive under those conditions. Many vehicle owners waste time, money, and oil on unnecessary oil changes, for example. The quality of engine oil and filters has steadily improved to keep pace with the requirements of new engines.

Starting with the new '03 Accord, Honda has extended the normal maintenance interval from 7500 miles to 10,000 miles.

smu2000 - You may want to consider a Bosch filter also. I saw a Bosch, STP, Mobil 1, and a few others cut in half as part of a display at an auto parts store. The Mobil 1 and Bosch looked like they had the most filter area inside. I deemed the Bosch the best value, and did not see the point in springing for the much more expensive Mobil 1.

Oil costs very little when walmart purchases in bulk and they pass the savings to you. For people saying walmart is not to be trusted because of someone forgetting to add enough oil, its just human error and could happen at any oil change shop. Our store has replaced a few engines over time because of this and the guilty people no longer work at the store.

Hmm.. Lowest I have seen those Jugs is $17.88. This includes a number of Walmarts in Pa, Va, and FL. I have found that they are most often available in the spring, but my Walmart has them now too. I have 3 of them now. I have 2 or 3 Mobil 1 filters around too because I found them on sale somewhere.

I have only ever used Mobil1 in my current car (bought new) since the first change at about 1500 miles. At about 10,000 miles, I began to also use Mobil1 filters. I have been pleased with their filters and notice a difference in the oil when I change it. I change my oil with Mobil1 and the M1 filter about every 4,000 miles. They say you can go longer, but I drive pretty hard, and like to have fresh oil in the car.

As for the benefits of synthetic... if you plan to keep your car for a long time, I would reccomend them. I noticed a drop in the operating temp, and they say you get about 3% better gas mileage too. Not to mention the improved friction reduction etc.

As far as filter quality... some of the OEM/regular filters scored well in those "take apart" studies. AC Delco (OEM for my car) got a good review. FRAM totally sucks and get ripped on by anyone who knows about oil filters. You get what you pay for...

I also would not trust Walmart without watching what they are doing. I would not let them do it while I shopped. I have heard stories about many of these places "redlining" cars, and generally not being say professional. For this reason, when I bought a new car last summer, I decided to start doing my own oil changes, as well as other routine maintenance things like changing the Fuel Filter etc..

Try Mobil1.com. Act as if you are going to buy one online to get the part number.

They are probably selling them off because they are going to stop selling them.. at least the KMart here has.

5 quart Mobile 1 econlomy pack at walmart: $17.88 (only need 4 for my car) Mobile 1 oil filter : $7

Oil change: $22.50 for some of the best oil and filter you can buy. I could change the oil in any of the 15 or 20 cars I've ever had in less than 20 minutes.

I guess time for me to learn to change my own oil, but I am soooooo lazy. The super Walmart around here still sells Mobil 1 for like 4.97 a piece. I guess I gotta keep on looking.

Well people keep putting Fram oil filters down - I read the "reviews" and didn't see anything of major concern with Fram oil filters - Honda uses Fram filters too?

How many Hondas have died using Fram oil filters then? Hondas are reliable cars as far as I am aware - I'm sure they would not want to risk that over the use of substandard filters costing a few $$$

I'd be pretty certain that if you are changing your oil at intervals less than 5000miles then there will be nothing to worry about.

I may be wrong though - time will tell - 93500miles on my Nissan 240SX SE now.

I better check what filter it is that Walmart uses ;)

p.s. when I got my car back from the 15 point service they noted that my air filiter needs replaced - shows what they know - it is a K&N filter which was cleaned about 2 months ago ;)

This is a hot deal..

However, those of you who need 15,20-50w viscosity might have trouble telling them because they might be sort of ignorant and use 10-30w.

For all you turbo/performance nuts out there.. use 15-50w :) It's good for you.

Oil is flammable, so I don't think the usual shipping methods would apply.

Anyone have a link for discounted quality filters?
