As others touched on, if somebody has an addictive personality then of course MMORPGs will cause issues. However, if it is no EQ, for example, then it will just be something else. One can be responsible and still play those games.

I have played EQ since 1999, not too far after release, and I still play it. In fact I am in an end-game guild (uber guild if you want to use loser l33t speak), my druid has more hitpoints than the typical warrior on our server, but I have managed to have a 'real life' outside of EQ. I managed to get through college, go to martial arts twice a week, go to the gym (okay have slacked off on that) and worked ~45 hours a week.

People can play those games reasonably well, but those clowns that quit school/work/social life are just losers to begin with and it has nothing to do with the game. They have other issues and EQ/DAoC/AC/UO is not the issue.

I've had a Druid for almost 5 years too on Veeshan with almost 10khp buffed by the time I retired him in March. What server do you play on?

I started off on Tunare but I created my druid on Luclin as soon as the server went live in 2000 and have played since then. Depending if I have tribute turned on, but usually I get somewhere in the ballpark of 10,100 HPs.

Our guild is finishing up trying to get the last few people their signets for Anguish, which is basically the VT of the OoW expansion. The most recent expansion, Omens of War, really is pretty fun. It has some very creative events that actually require *gasp* thinking. There really isn't too much of the same target, /assist, chain CH crap . . . well there is but you got to do a lot of other things at the same time!
There is one event we all just call the "Simon Says Expedition" and during the course of the event, you get broadcasted messaged that says something to the effect of "Soandso badguy is aiming at your head, you need to duck" or "Soandso badass is leading their target, stand still" or "Soandso asskicker is aiming at you, move" and you have to follow this directions or you get nailed with some 9k arrow.
Kind of irritating when you are actually doing it, but it is fun when it is all said and done.

However we have lost quite a number of people to WoW so it has been making raids kind of tough for the past couple of weeks. One of the other high-end guilds on the server lost a lot of people and they have had to recruit tons and need to go back and do Time to gear them all up.

Apparantly even Township Rebellion from SH lost a lot of people because the remaining members transferred from Stormhammer to Luclin to rebuild.
For the most part, though, I still have fun in EQ. I like raiding and don't think I can stand to level and gear up up another character again on any game.

WoW completely consumed a week of my life outside of work when it was in open beta. It set me a week behind my studies. The lack of sleep affected my productivity at work.

I bought the game but I haven't installed it. I gave the game to my gf to hold until I complete finals.

i've wanted to start playing ro a bit again, don't know which free servers are good though. advice/info please? :)

Heh.. a few of my friends love ro. For the past 2 years (this'll be the 3rd), we've played during this time of the year and then dropped it around Feb. It's fun with other people, imo. We usually just pay for the game though.. (we've done the free server thing and it's a pita when everything gets wiped or the server is slow & laggy)

For the poll, I do it this way, I still go to work, watch the shows I like, go to bed at the same time, go out when me friends call, etc.... the time you see you have a problem is like all other addiction- if you find yourself calling in sick to work, if you see yourself lying to your friends to not go out, if you lose sleep to playing, etc.... that is when it's time to quit.

It was fukked up!There were days... wow I'd give anything to have it back. It was better than real life.

Sad but true, it was that much fun.

I still remember when I got the game for Christmas along with my computer. I still remember the first time I logged in on my own account and computer and chopped some wood.

omg! the flashbacks...

Games in general are a pretty bad choice, it's not hard to figure out that a game that is addicting & has no end is even worse.

Wow, nerds reminiscing. My "good old high school days" are of parties and rioting, not powerleveling and grinding. :p

funny.. i dunno how people get that addicted its insane. i like games but i'll always choose something social over sitting in front of a PC even more than i do at work :)

i did start ffxi a couple weeks ago, but i'm lucky to get an hour of game time a day, if any at all..

Good times with UO. I still have two beta test CDs for it from back in the day - testing it with my 486DX2.

UO back in the day, when you could charm the blacksmith to attack a player and the uberguards would kill it (pissing off everyone waiting for the blacksmith) was the bomb-diggity

Not worth the wasted time. They are fun but you'll look back afterwards and wonder why you wasted that time.

They seem like fun, but I have a friend who dropped out of HS to play ultima online (back in the late 90s) and it seems like some other people have EQ engulf their life. I tried WOW on a 10 day trial and its a lot of fun, debating if I should buy the game (and probably spend all winter break playing it) or just let my account lapse and play some fps games and spend most of my time out with friends instead.

If you're the type that easily gets addicted, I'd stay away from MMORPG's. They can take over your life if you're not careful. I speak from experience, Everquest (Fires of Heaven) consumed nearly 5 years of my life, and about 650 real days /played. Pathetic? It sure is, and I regret it. Just stay away if you tend to obsess over things.

:Q

that is just insane!

good thing i hate MMORPG's. gimmie some halo 2 + xbox live instead.

EDIT: Oh, and its kinda sad to read some of these posts. i didnt realize people actually DID some of his stuff so extremely.

I spent 2 years and 100 days /played just to get my Ranger to level 60 in EQ. I was level 61 and in the process of joining a raiding guild on Terris-Thule when I hung up my Thunderbolt. I only managed to finish one epic, lacking only the Hate stone for the second, and now the Ranger is a foraging mule for my cousin and probably wearing banded. (Ok, not that bad...) I just didn't have the time anymore. I do have an addictive personality, so I find it much easier to just play UT2004. I can play a DM match in 5 minutes or spend an hour or two bouncing around servers. It's easy to walk away and I don't have to worry about keeping up with levels, equipment, etc... It is much more fun if I play regularly though because otherwise my skills start to slip a bit. Put Gameface on your buddy lists and drop me a line sometime.

You really can't enjoy an MMO without dedicating at least 20 hours a week to it. You'll also need to build ties with other players that will keep you bound to the game out of loyalty to them. So choosing to seriously play an MMO is a bigger decision than is it fun or not.

In the past I have dedicated a lot of time to leve up and all of that jazz. However now we just do big raid targets so most of us just log in to BS for a bit then raid, wipe, recover, and repeat. It is actually pretty fun talking to people from literally all over the world and getting to know others.

Man, I'm such a nerd.

Meh, I'm on a bit of a personal vacation until I start school again in january. Its defintely a bit time consuming, but thats more because I have nothing better to do, rather than anything else. I cant see myself ditching others in RL to play the game...I mean, its just a game!
