They seem like fun, but I have a friend who dropped out of HS to play ultima online (back in the late 90s) and it seems like some other people have EQ engulf their life. I tried WOW on a 10 day trial and its a lot of fun, debating if I should buy the game (and probably spend all winter break playing it) or just let my account lapse and play some fps games and spend most of my time out with friends instead.

They are awsome.. just dont let them take over your life, had that problem with UO a few years back, didn't drop out or anything but it wasn't an impressive year or 2

thats what i'm thinking. from observations made on friends from high school, the ones who were doing hardcore drugs were better off than the ones who really got into MMORPGs.

you'd be much better off spending the time doing something constructive but for the most part if people didn't play MMORPGs they'd just spend the time doing something else just as pointless. it's just as good of a time waster as anything else.

If you're the type that easily gets addicted, I'd stay away from MMORPG's. They can take over your life if you're not careful. I speak from experience, Everquest (Fires of Heaven) consumed nearly <deleted> Just stay away if you tend to obsess over things.

::shrug::

Find some other games that are cheaper for the run, and you get Variety.

EV:Nova
Homeworld1/2
Descent (any of the 5 games that go by that title)
Doom3/HL2
UT2K4

I've sold my old SWG stuff for over $1000 in total.

And I'm proud to say I haven't played SWG in over 7 months, after playing since release.

Game is fun, but shit, it kills your life if your serious.

I've made many $1000's of dollars off selling UO items. it's the only reason i've kept my accounts. I'd have quit it years ago if it wasn't for fleabay

if people get so sucked into MMORPG's that it starts to affect their outside lives, they're probably messed up to begin with, and if it weren't MMORPG's, something else would have caused their life to become a trainwreck.

I played EQ and DAoC throughout college. I didn't get anymore into them then I'd get into any other game, and it saved me money from buying a new consol game every 2-3 months so I'd have a time sink for boredom in my life. the big reason they were so much fun was because everyone in my dorm played them. there's something fun about people yelling at eachother up and down the hall over stuff that was hapening in-game :) I stopped playing when I left that dorm hall, though, because it stopped being fun once I stopped playing with people I knew IRL.

Diablo II literally took a year out of my life and I know MMORPGs are more addictive so I won't even start.

I play FPS. I tried the entire MMORPG thing back a couple years ago and it nearly ruined my grades. I was able to stop before any real damage was done. They suck -- stick with games you can put down easily and instantly.

As others touched on, if somebody has an addictive personality then of course MMORPGs will cause issues. However, if it is no EQ, for example, then it will just be something else. One can be responsible and still play those games.

I have played EQ since 1999, not too far after release, and I still play it. In fact I am in an end-game guild (uber guild if you want to use loser l33t speak), my druid has more hitpoints than the typical warrior on our server, but I have managed to have a 'real life' outside of EQ. I managed to get through college, go to martial arts twice a week, go to the gym (okay have slacked off on that) and worked ~45 hours a week.

People can play those games reasonably well, but those clowns that quit school/work/social life are just losers to begin with and it has nothing to do with the game. They have other issues and EQ/DAoC/AC/UO is not the issue.

Nothing even comes close to "true UO" pre UO:R and right at the beginning of UO:R was ok. It was a narcotic. There was 6 or 7 of us that played and a few of us played at least 8 hrs a day, I can't remember when i'd go to bed at 7am, get up a 5pm play until 7am. It was fukked up!There were days... wow I'd give anything to have it back. It was better than real life.

Sad but true, it was that much fun.

I still remember when I got the game for Christmas along with my computer. I still remember the first time I logged in on my own account and computer and chopped some wood.
