mmorpgs are too much of a grind
unless you play non stop (aka eq2,ffXI), you get nowhere

Well, I personally play FFXI, but it sounds like you want a much "lighter" MMO than something like XI or even WoW.

A pretty good number of people I know play Flyff, which is rather RO-like from my experiences.

I do not want to play, nor have I, play WoW or EQ series. I used to play Lineage II, but it got boring quick. I loved Diablo II LOD (pre 1.1 patch) and Priston Tale was my all time favorite. What games are worth looking into right now?

Sorry but WoW is the only MMO out right now that is worth a darn at all..
played them all...

I would say screw WoW, EQ2 or whatever they are saying and go w/ EVE. It is a space based MMO that's pretty kick ass, but i don't know if you would consider it a RPG.

LOL this coming from somebody who likes Priston Tale?

MMORPGs are in a sad state right now. WoW really is the best one out there... this doesn't mean it's good, only that it sucks less than the rest. At any rate it beats watching prime-time TV (as does watching paint dry, and for that matter eating the chips once it has) so it's what I'm playing. I'm really looking forward to Vanguard, which is in development by EQ's former lead developer and much of his original team. If you think of EQ as a raidfest, you're thinking of the game Sony turned it into after he left, not the immersive, complex world it was beforehand. Because of that, btw, I no longer buy Sony products/services.

EVE-Online, if you like complexity and potentially elaborate pvp, and a space-based MMORPG as opposed to a swords and sorcery based one.

I have played EVE before, but it costs a good amount of REAL money (cashola) to do anything worth while. Its more of a FPS too, if I remember.

I don't see why you are asking us, you got adice from some people about WoW and EQ and assumed it's a kids game. I play with people who have family's and raid 5 nights a week. It just depends where you go.

My guild is similar in makeup but without rules quite as strict. Two of our hunters are in their mid-teens, other than that everyone is at least 20, with an average of probably 25. Guild leader is 40 and we have 2 or 3 married couples who play. Being a Blizzard game WoW certainly has its share of the little ones, but there are pockets of sanity here & there. The server instability and lag are far worse IMO; you can leave general chat to get away from the prolific insights such as "2 y plz b wut ur" and the charming all-caps LFG messages, but when the servers are having their nightly troubles, there isn't anything you can do about it.

I was going to help you with your decision but you chose to take the route of elitist in reference to WoW. Oh well. 'This game is meant for 10 year olds because some kids told me so lol elventy1!!11!'

If you think Eve is all boring, your playing the game wrong. Yes it CAN be boring, some people enjoy that part of eve, ie mining, producing, playing the market, running missions. But it can also be so insanly exciting and crazy that you break out in cold-sweats and have to step back and walk around the room to recover after a fleet engagement. Good luck getting that sort of reaction from WoW.

The point of Eve is that you choose to play how you want, be it boring or exciting. And there are very few annoying teenagers playing Eve. I think the youngest person i've ran into who wasn't on a trial account was 18 years old. Thats the reason I play, its exciting, challenging, and has a mature audience. Some don't like it, but the ones who do LOVE it.

Plus the relationship between the players and the game developers is like no other. Can you talk to the developers of WoW via the forums, email, or in person? There was just an Eve meeting in Vegas last week with several of the key developers. The meeting was setup by players and the Devs flew out to join them, answer questions, and get drunk with the players. No other game has the players being so much a part of how the game is developed.

but I guess I am biased...

played that, it was a pretty good game in beta and post beta. p2p'd for 2 months, but my friend definatly surpassed me and joined some elite guild and I decided that I wanted to play priston tale again, and started that back up and he got an even higher level, and now met his IRL girlfriend from the game and well, im useless to him!

I have played some private servers for Lineage II for a while, but they definatly aren't as good as the p2p server community.

You obviously have never been in a good guild or gone on a 40 man raid into horde territory :)

Funny, I did just the other night. I won the arena event in STV playing my friend's 60 rogue, it was a spur of the moment thing after 2boxing him to walk my lowbie alt to BB. It was challenging because he's a sword rogue who doesn't play much and is decked out in a mix of greens & blues with only 3200hp, while my rogue main is daggers wearing mostly epics with over a thousand more hp... but it was 11:50 server time, I wouldn't have been able to get my rogue there in time - and as I said, it was on a whim.

It was a fantastic game of cat & mouse between three 60 rogues and a 44 rogue thrown into the mix. I made a few mistakes and even died from one, but I came back and the chest was still there. I found one of the other rogues and dispatched him handily, then the other ambushed me (well, cheap-shotted to use game terminology) and kept me stunlocked to 10% - at which point I managed to turn the tables and kept him stunned 100-0. The dreaded stunlock is something I've been working on, as I'd like to take my PvP to a new level, so it was a great feeling to do it to perfection and win despite being knocked down to 10% with him still at full health. You don't just sit there and stun, you sacrifice a lot of damage to do it and need to practice timing and energy conservation for it to be effective. My previous tactics of brute force (which served & still serve me well in my mainly PvE game experience, fwiw) were working less and less well, as rogues get nerfed every patch and opposing players get more and more health (rogues can do great burst damage, but if you survive it we're gimped and easily dispatched). My palms were sweating as I opened the chest, and I forgot to shift-loot (and predictably, was hit with a bit of loot lag, which made me even more nervous). In total it took almost a half an exhiharating hour.

The point of Eve is that you choose to play how you want, be it boring or exciting.
I haven't played EVE but I'll admit this open-endedness is something WoW doesn't excel in, and something I miss about pre-PoP EQ. This is by design, of course; as a first-timers' game it is made to hold the player's hand a bit, to guide him. At times it feels almost scripted. There is only one method of advancement (raiding), since it's cheaper to design content for 40 people at a time. This is taken pretty much untouched from post-PoP (aka Sony-era) profit-oriented EQ when they raped the game world in hopes of saving a few pennies and thus achieving greater profits - it thrills me to no end that this backfired so badly on them btw :D It's not surprising, since Blizzard hired many Sony-era EQ developers, including the lead content designer.

However space/sci-fi never was my thing; I prefer a fantasy setting. That's just me, and it's why I wouldn't be able to really sink my teeth into EVE.
