stop watching cable tv as computer is better anyway, and use the money for a broadband. i have a 1.5 megabit cable connection, for about 9 bucks a month!
it's not that expensive. Guild Wars is an awesome game and would run ok on a 56k, but with a broadband connetion, it's great!

Not everyone can get broadband. Only half of internet users actually have broadband.

There are no free MMO's. And no, I don't count Runescape.

actually, there are quite a few excellent 3D MMORPGs:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MMORPGs#Free_to_Play

Silkroad Online is especially fun

And there are more free games made by Korean devs listed here:

http://www.gamengame.com/en/

There is so such a thing as a free lunch.

This thread titled reminded me of this one mmorpg I used to play a couple years ago, it was truely the game for us who haven't the time nor the motivation to actually do anything. For the life of me I cannot remember what it was called, all it was was a small program that sat in the system tray & randomly updates with new skills, levels, items, quests, & the like. And the host website would rank all the players. I got up to like level 60 on that thing!

I repeat: DO NOT buy WoW and go to Ironforge on 56K
I think your comp'll crash
and then faces will melt.
Only if you play a Shadow Priest in PvP, silly.

And for the record, WoW is entirely playable on a decent 56k connection, I've done it when my broadband was down. IF lag issues are 90% server-side, as the game has to load several hundred models and textures because of the heavy viewable population.

Where the real issue comes into play, if is you are trying to run TeamSpeak or some other application that requires more bandwidth than your dial-up connection. Also, 80MB-patch days will be a bitch.

It's best to ignore trolls like Xylitol, as their rabid, uneducated anti-fanboy mentality is just as depraved, or even moreso, than that of the real fanboys. Being blinded by hate, rather than by lust doesn't make them any less disabled. But it is more fun to watch them repeatedly bang their shins on the furniture.

I agree with cK... almost all the problems sited in this thread are related to hardware issues, not bandwidth. Having cable or DSL does help, but mostly the difference is when you are "zoning into" the world (or in EQ when you are zoning from one area to another). Performance issues in Ironforge and other high pop/high detail zones are almost entirely eliminated by having 1-2 GB of RAM, a high end video card, and a fast CPU. I'm not saying there are no negative effects from having low bandwidth, but the games are not less playable as a result unless you start adding on things like teamspeak or ventrillo, or have other internet using programs running while you're playing.

I played WoW just fine on 56k... up to level 30 or so before I ever got highspeed...

You should be fine... even Ironforge worked not bad.

Wrong! Anarchy Online is free. All of the expansions will cost you a monthly fee, but you can play the original release for free.

Upgrade to broadband and play AO!

Agreed; I played WoW on 56.6 for a short period of time and it was surprisingly playable.

I know more than a couple of people who got to 60 on 56.6k, just expect Alterac Valley (40 vs 40 battleground) to be playable.
