hi,

i was playing the original DAOC two years ago.

Recently i decided i want to play a nice MMORPG again (because i am sick of all that stupid FPS games) - and i got Asheron's Call 2, the 15 day free trial.

So...i 'only' have a XP1900, 384MB ram and a Radeon 9800 Pro - i am building a new PC in fall, maybe late fall/winter.

AC2 runs very slow on my machine, i have constantly swapping. Need more RAM, so i cant really enjoy it right now.

But...the point is....i do not like the AC2 engine THAT much..i dont know..from what i saw the landscape looks very 'flat' and 'artificial'. I just dont 'get into it' that much as i did with the old DAOC. besides i like the medieval settings etter for a MMORPG. (like in Daoc)

I do NOT have shrouded isles, anyone can tell me whether it is good, eg. did they improve the engine ?
What about Daoc:Catacombs ??? I am looking forward to it....any information about the improvements in 'catacombs'... ?

Thanks !!!

They updated the game engine again with Trials of Atlantis. The graphics arent bad but catacombs is supposed to bring everything up a level. The screenies I have seen will give the avatars in EQII a run for their money.

I think you shouldnt have a problem running TOA with lower settings. If you do build a new machine soon I suggest at least 1GB of memory. With the SI client they allow you to precache textures in memory and for the fullest effect you need at least 768MBs free.

TOA is a high end quest expansion. You can do master levels which are a real pain in the ass but if done you get special abilities. You can also get artifacts. Artifacts are weapons, armor, or items that can gain experience by killing. Each level will unlock a new ability of the weapon.

Some will say you are required to get ML10 + be pimped out in artifacts just to compete. They are usually unskilled nubs who couldnt fight their way out a low level dungeon. It is nice to have but you can compete with just a player made suit of armor and a brain.

The also released "new frontiers" 2 months ago. The old frontier system is gone and in its place is a new one. The majority of players like it because it makes it easier to get into the fight. You can now teleport to any keep you own provided you have a supply line open and the keep has all of its towers. The people who piss and moan about it are the former gank squad members who got to use their overpowered templates on unorganized noobs. They have either quit the game or gone to the pvp server where they can get their fill of 8v8 combat till their butt bleeds from the beatings they take from 14 year old assclowns.

In catacombs along with the new graphics engine they will allow for instanced dungeons. So now your group or battle group will have the dungeon all to themselves. Also the Hibs + Mids get two new classes while the Albs get one. Currently the game is having a little issue with population balances. Albion has always had the upper hand when it came to populations. But in the old frontiers it didnt matter as much because you could camp the milegates and stop them cold. Now with superior numbers and the game centered around keep and tower sieges. Their overpopulation trumps the other two realms superior abilities. They are trying to correct the issue by offering exp, free levels, and gold to under populated realms. Hopefully it will work.

Blizzard has always catered to the low end user, and I feel that WoW shouldnt be any different. Although my system is mid-high end, I think yours should be fine.

Wait for WoW, DAoC is totally borked. Seriously, I played for like 2.5 years but quit for the last year after ToA came out. I went back last week and the game is in an aweful state. I played midgard and they are seriously underpopulated right now at least. I tried to rvr with my non-ToA geared chars and got bitch slapped hardcore. I quit last fall because the game just wasn't fun anymore and they've only made it worse. The graphics are much nicer with ToA though.

Only go back to DAoC if you're an alb caster basically, everyone else has been marginalized.

EDIT: And I totally agree about AC2, I played for like 2 m onths after release and it was like playing a beta. Empty servers, empty game world, buggy gameplay, etc. I felt exactly the same about the terrain too, it looked worse then quake3 TA terrain with stetched textures and messed up height maps all over the place.

I said it when the game was released, and I'll say it again: Eve is the worst game I have ever played. I've never played an internet flash game that was worse than Eve. The game is just.... awful. I bought it for $55 within the first month it was released, wanting to get into a new MMORPG. I sold it at the end of that week for $5. A truly awful experience. The beginning of the game REQUIRES you to mine. For weeks. In hopes that someday you'll be powerful enough to mine in more dangerous places. Woopee!! It seemed like there was more depth to it further in, with player owned factories, and a player based economy that was EXTREMELY complex. But all of that was so far out of reach of a new player, it's not even funny.

In UO you could have run the smelting black market, with your uniform to boot.

I dont actually like it, but whenever I see a vein of copper, I run over to it... it takes about 30 seconds to get all the ore I can out of it. :)

in the begining mining was a way too big part of the game, but not anymore, doing agient missions is more proffitable than mining in high sec space for beginners and you can get tech2 components which you can then sell for gobbs of money to tech2 manufacturers. If you are lucky your lvl3 agient gives you an implant and you can sell it for 20millions.

My way of making money in the game right now is killing npc's, I get a nice bounty and I get pretty good loot which I can refine into minerals or move to empire to sell for money. I'm planning to get one of my corp mates to build me another battleship when I have enough. I also made over 100millions in trading ships, putting out buy orders for low and then selling the ships for more than I bought them. Almost completely risk free line of work and you only need a few millions to get you started.

Asheron's Call (the original, not the crappy AC2) still rocks! Q2 of 2005 they are coming out with an expasion pack that is going to update all the textures.

I've been playing for nearly 4 years now.

Population issues are their main problem atm. But being non-toa geared is not an issue if you get a decent group and play your character correctly. I grow tired of the non-stop whining about not being in TOA gear. My dark SM has 1 artifact that is lvl 0 atm. She has zero problems knocking around people provided she doesnt do something stupid like try to take on tanks.

Hell just the other night this ML10\RR10 fire wizard got into my sites and dropped him in 3 casts. All I have is player made gear and merchant bought items with no master levels and 1 artifact.

Mining in UO was sweet though.... The risk of being PKed, the risk of someone jacking your ore, selling your ingots, or being a blacksmith yourself.... Man, I wish that game still had the cocaine style affect it once had on me. Trammel was the death blow.

How hard is the game to get into? I don't have the time to learn what every single key on the keyboard can be used for.

Its not easy thats for sure. Its not complex in a way that some games are where you have way too many keys and functions than you know what to do with. In that regard its very simple. Its complex because it has so many options. Best way to get into this game is to get into a good corp with people that help you learn and help you build up your character.

And one thing, you dont have to mine unless you want to :)

*waiting on WoW and EQ2*

Seems like everyone except me got in the WoW beta, is there any way to check if you got in? At least I can try the stress test I guess...whenever that starts.
