Good point, I never played AC1. Sounded better than EQ, but I always heard about rampant cheating and exploiting. Beta tested AC2 and completely laughed it off. But, ya, AC1 might be cool too.

I heard about cheating, but I never saw it. They just banned the use of comabt macros that people were using for leveling. There are some kick-ass third-party apps to use with it in-game as well to help enhance the experience.

How in 3 years of AC1 did you "never" see cheating? I played for 2.5 years and saw a LOT of cheating. And just because they banned macroes does not at all mean they're gone. Those were my major gripes about AC1, great game, but the cheating ruined it.

I don't even know what people were doing that was "cheating"...

I've played DAoC and Asheron's Call 2... and I really didnt have favorable experiences from either. I was really hoping SWG would be good, as would Worlds of Warcraft, but after AC2... and the level treadmill, I just dont know if I really want to get back into the whole thing.

In the AC community the definition of "cheating" was not black and white and I suppose that is what you mean there. So I guess you can say there were many "very questionable" actions players did. Some considered exploiting a bug as not "cheating", they called it a "feature" of the game. Duping items was a popular feature.

An intersting one that just came out recently, heavy on the tradeskills is A tale in the Desert based in ancient Egypt. Very community driven, strangly as a dedicated EQ player, I liked it alot and go back and forth between the two.

Next question - Why don't they just give the games away for free since you have to pay each month for them? Seems silly to charge $39.95 for a game when you're still paying $15/month.

To make up for those that only play for a month or 2 then quit.... and to defer the costs of initial development. In AC the subscription cost goes towards continuing development, unlike the other MMORPGs.

It's all about SWG. I've been following that on the Sony forums for a while, and it's going to rock, IMO. Looks like a great skill system and they've got the SW license. How can they go wrong? 🙂

I'm a bit disappointed that it's been delayed though. I upgraded both my machine and my girlfriends machine just so we could play SWG. Now it's looking like it'll come out this summer, right in the middle of motorcycle season. 🙁

daoc has actually had quite a bit of expansion that was just in regular patches and not the expansion... as for leveling my wizard is level 37 without even two days of playtime...

Space simulation called EVE is suppose to be good.

But I still don't like the idea of paying $50 for the game AND $10-$15 a month to play it online.

running those servers is not cheap. Blizzard does it with battlenet, but battlenet sucks and is always laggy.

I'm guessing that WOW will be using dedicated servers and not their existing BNet servers.

its verant. they'll find a way.
I absolutely hate EQ. I've watched my girlfriend play before and I wanted to throw her computer out the window after a few minutes just to make her stop playing.

But with SWG, they've taken strides to get rid of the level treadmill that so many see as the goal of the game. The main designer, I think, is one of the guys from the UO team. I like the move to a skill based instead of level based system, and the fact that they're creating more of a true economy. Obviously, they could totally screw the pooch, but I'm maintaining hope that within a few months I'll be looking out over the deserts of Tatooine and wiping a tear of joy from my eye. 😀

i don't think bnet eats much bandwidth. there very little communication between bnet and and your client, i think

I would say EQ is still the current best. Despite the fact that it's been out for over 3 years, and despite the fact that there are constantly new MMORPGs coming out to compete with it, EQ has constantly grown in size and population. Infact, there are currently over 400,000 subscriptions, and they just opened a new server a couple of weeks ago. But to get the most from EQ, you'll need to buy all the expansions...
