MMORPG that you actually have to RP

As the title suggests, what games could you recommend that would be MMO + with forced RP (at least to some degree). Also I don't like cartoon/shiny graphics like in WoW and League of Heroes.

Asheron's Call was great for that, but I think there's only high level players left.

There is no such thing as a game where RP is forced, unless you want to play on some private server with 100 people at peak.

That sort of game would never ever make any money.

OP I think you are looking for Neverwinter Nights and the player made and run Persistent Worlds. They are smaller communities, some of which I'm sure meet your RP needs.

So finding a game I like in general and then looking for a private server is the way for me. Thanks :)

You said you didn't like cartoony graphics -- how about no graphics? There are still a number of MUDs that have decent player bases where RP is strictly enforced.

Could you recommend some? Although at least some graphics would be good. I played Ultima Online in private RP servers and enjoyed it despite "bad, aged" graphics. Ultima Online actually looks a lot better than most modern games to my eye :)

Yeah, there isn't any real demand for that type of game. Well, at least not enough for the company making the game to recoup their costs.

There were general mmo's that had separate role playing servers. Everquest, while I played (many, many years ago) was one. I never actually logged onto a server like that though, so I don't know how much the role playing was enforced. Or, for that matter, if the "rp" was just a pvp mechanic of some sort, since I wasn't particulary interested in it myself

Most current MMO's have RP servers. Try out LOTRO since it's free and go onto their RP server. I RP'd as a Hobbit hunter that had a fear for fighting and thus was only like level 5, and that was only to kill for some local meat and get a starting mount. Once I got to the point where I had to travel for my new recipes and to learn the higher cooking skills, I would hire a band of mercenaries to protect me. I also enjoyed many nights at the tavern watching plays and dancing and getting so drunk that I would end up in the neighbor's cabbage field, which would make her quite unhappy.

The only one I have any experience with is Gemstone IV. It's $15ish a month to play though, and it's all text. Great roleplaying community (although it's quite a bit smaller than it used to be), good game mechanics, but I'm not sure it's what you're really looking for. NWN sounds like more your style, as others have said.

Also, regarding the RP servers on modern MMOs, while there definitely is some roleplaying on the server, they are more "No OOC" realms rather than RP realms. You'll get chastised for being OOC but no one is going to force you to roleplay, either. Those servers do at least tend to be a bit more mature than your normal servers (and orders of magnitude more mature than a PVP server), but if you're looking for a really in-depth RP experience I don't think that would fit the bill either. Your best bet for a modern MMO is to find an RP guild on an RP server, but don't expect everyone you see in-game to be roleplaying.

I just picked up the Neverwinter Nights 2 Platinum package during the Steam sale op. It still has some PW out there.

Honestly none of them ever seen terribly full but it's still fun. At the least I'd play with ya as I missed NWN2 when it was released so it's still new and fresh to me :)

Did anyone mention "real life"? The rendering is awesome, but the death penalty is teh suck.

I've been playing it for a few years. It gets frustrating after a while because the "devs" maintain a strict policy of zero balancing, and there is no option to mute annoying people.

Yes, but the graphics are amazing and can run on almost any system, and the "bump mapping" on the female character models is particularly eye catching. :D

Well, you won't believe this, but I'm playing EVE online. A very complex game and RPing in one way or another is not avoidable, because you play as a cloned ship pilot (I think :D ). Also when I need some hardcore forced RP, I will probably go and play in some Ultima Online RP servers.
