A 22-year-old gamer has spent $26,500 (£13,700) on an island that exists only in a computer role-playing game (RPG).

The Australian gamer, known only by his gaming moniker Deathifier, bought the island in an online auction.

The land exists within the game Project Entropia, an RPG which allows thousands of players to interact with each other.
...
"This is a historic moment in gaming history, and this sale only goes to prove that massive multi-player online gaming has reached a new plateau," said Marco Behrmann, director of community relations at Mindark, the game's developer.

Deathifier will make money from his investment as he is able to tax other gamers who come to his virtual land to hunt or mine for gold.

He has also begun to sell plots to people who wish to build virtual homes.

"This type of investment will definitely become a trend in online gaming," said Deathifier.

First time on software, but this is the 3rd repost of the week.

And I thought the morons who spent *any* amount of cash on a bit of currency or an item from games on ebay were dumb...

It is quite possible for him to get his money back AND THEN some

Update: Deathifier has spent another $20,000 for a mail-order bride, since obviously he could never attract someone of the opposite sex.

if he has 26k to spend at age 22, I'm pretty sure he won't be lonely later on in life, unless of course he went into major debt 😛

Fvck that! I'm gonna develop my own MMORPG and charge all you larpers $$$ to waste your life in a virtual world.

Who wants in on this?

Memememe, can I be a worthless gm?~!?!?!?!

Does anyone hear actually play Entropia ? I researched it after hearing about this guy. sounds like a good theory. You don't pay for the software, no monthly fee. You can pay for in game items with real money or you can earn all of your stuff without paying real money. I am moving from EQ I . I just never found a good guild that wanted to do guild quests together and in EQ I it is impossible to solo quests even as a 65 shaman. Anyway if you actually play Entropia I would be intrested to hear about it as I think I will try it out as soon as I get my replacement CPU

Hmm...

Make money by investing in video game property.

I never would have thought of that.

Then again, I bought a gMail invite back when gmail first came out with game money, so who knows 😛

This is insanity

Of course the guy can spend his money the way he wants but that's still a complete waste imo.

Some people here said that maybe he could sell it for more later but i don't think that someone is willing to spend 30 000 on a virtual island everyday !!!!

There is soooooo much more things that i could do with that 26 000 other that bragging that i own a bunch of pixel online.

Geez

yea like buy a crap load of hookers

I guess this game has a strange economy that costs real dollars....given that, it is a REAL investment. People are paying this guy cash to buy plots of land off of what is his, and they are taxed for coming onto his land and hunting and stuff for REAL money. I've never played this game but this is what I've heard. It would seem that its a little different than paying $300 for an account, or buying everquest money for cash.

Did he spent real money or game money? If he spent real money, man thats just dumb, but not as bad as the Korean guy that killed himself because he got depressed over D2.

That's real money. I used to spend $30,000 per month (in-game money) on rent for my housing in Asheron's Call and it never made the news. 🙂

While my practical side says this is completely ludicrous, my forward thinking side says that this is the start of a trend that was inevitable. I've been reading some SciFi/Cyber novels where this happens in online game worlds, I think it really is going to be common in a few years.
