MMORPG DarkFall

The long anticipated fps/rpg vaporwarez had been announced to go into testing with Beta being released in October.

Some info on the game from those unfamiliar with the title.

More specifics on key features courtesy of ZzZGuy from a older DF thread.
-You can build cities
-Capture cities
-Hire NPC guards
-Sail war/cargo/pirate ships
-Wage naval battles
-Become a pirate and raid player ships and settlements
-PvP anywhere, anytime. (it was mentioned on the site that there are "fair" penalties, i would assume this is like in EvE where you CAN attack anyone anywhere, but if your in a high security system the NPC cops will bust your @$$ hard)
-There is no level or class system for weapons and equipment, you can pick anything up when you first start (getting your hands of good stuff is another matter i would assume)
-FPS style fighting, no clicking a target to attack, you can jump to the side to dodge, you aim your spells, and you are 100% in control of your characters movements
-No classes, so if you want to go from alchemy to mining, you just start on that trade.
-10,000 people playing together.
-5 Races
-You can still play like you would in wow
-Or start your own craft making business complete with a building and NPC helpers.
-You can trade
-Almost everything is player made (like in EvE, but i would assume the real high end weapons you will still have to farm mobs)
-10,000 people per server will make for massive PvP battles. (i just hope they can avoid the lag issues EvE has with 500vs500 fleet battles, if not then that will kill a major part of darkfall)
-LOTS of mounts
-Fighting while on mounts
-No hovering names
-There is race specific magic and hundreds of spells
-Looks like stealth is more realistic (as in you stalk someone and strike them when they are not looking). A trailer mentioned that shiny armor will reduce your stealthiness.
-Player characters will show damage
and some Q&A's at http://mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?game=4&bhcp=1

You can check out the new gameplay trailer on youtube(6 parts). If you're iffy about the graphics, they purposely used a older engine so that 100v100 pvp wars will be lag free.

I watched a few of the trailers and game footage videos and none of it makes me interested in playing this game.

- The graphics are mediocre, even if they are on "reduced settings", the character animation is a joke...only the legs move when they run, and it looks like only one or two combat animations.

- Art Direction looks generic...orcs, humans, elves...what is the story behind this game?

- No leveling might sound good, but the point of an RPG is to "develop" your char as you play...i.e. grind and lvl. If anyone can get any weapon/armor then there is nothing special about playing the game to get the best gear (a top reason most people play MMOs).

- The "total freedom" thing seems like another one of those 'it sounds good on paper' ideas. The structure and limitations of a game are often what make it fun (or not fun) to play. A total lack thereof, i.e. Second Life, and you end up with a glorified chat room.

- PvP is fun, but there should be safe zones where your chances of getting ganked are low or none.

- FPS style fighting should be left to FPS style games. In this game, you have melee-only attackers who will be at a distinct disadvantage of any ranged attackers - unless there are some special abilities for melee attackers to close the gap quickly.

If someone is gonna go thru the trouble to make a game, plan it out so that it's not DOA...and in 2008, the circa 1998 graphics and animation simply fail.

It's funny, because based on the listed features alone (no idea how much is true as I've never read anything about the game) I'm more interested in this than WAR.

great list, but it depends on how it's delivered.

FYI, the developers behind this were big fans of the Asheron's Call realm Darktide, which was free-for-all pvp. This is not a WoW clone, it's a rpg-fps hybrid focused on pvp and "no rules" gameplay.

Ironically I signed up for the site in 2003 hoping to get into the beta, and still had an account from back then. Maybe that will get me the "dedicated fan" flag, even though I haven't signed on the account in 4 years 😛.

edit- I should also mention that when they say "skill" based, it means that you have various skills that develop with use. So you'd still have character development, but that could be through pve, or pvp, or crafting, etc.

Forgotten I had signed up for the forums a long time ago, so I signed up for the beta, why not?

I would be shocked if this game ever made gold! No way this game is going to survive, even if it mades it out of beta.

I'm dying to get in on this thing, but I'm at work and can't RDP to my home comp. Anyone have a dxdiag they could upload that I could use? I'll change any computer specific info.

Edit: OP moved to older thread

Edit2: ANYONE have a DXDIAG I can use???

Anybody here get in yet? I didn't see when they will start sending out invites.

Your skills are level based, with developers hoping to bang out 1000 unique skills before retail, each skill will deteriorate over time and drop back to level 1 without use. I read if you manage to max out 100 skills a special skill is accessible.

PvP will have an alignment system so if you're murdering people left and right, don't expect to be able to stroll into town like nothing happened while the NPC gaurds are chasing you down.

The FPS style gameplay is similar to Oblivion, which I absolutely loved. No more homing missile type fire balls or double clicking a enemy once and sitting back till hes dead. You'll have to aim your shots to do damage.

You can wait till you get home since the sign up order doesn't matter in the selection process.

Here is a link to a couple of die hard fans visiting the DF Headquarters in Greece. They give some insight on the place and how the game is going and ask some questions on specific features.

I have been following this game for a few years now and all I see promises. Sure the video showed off some cool stuff and it proved that the game does in fact exist in some form, but what I don't see in that video is a game that has any chance of coming out this year. Sure beta may happen sometime before the end of the year, but it has been promised before so don't hold your breath.

I am user number 3700 or so out of the now 80000 on the forums, signed up in 2001. God I have been waiting FOREVER for this game.

There will be no long drawn out closed beta, just a short one before release. Hopefully it lives up to their plans for it to be so polished it needs no refining in a huge beta.

can't wait

You know what gets me is that people will criticize games like Vanguard and AoC for not having a long enough beta, which is very true, but when it comes to Darkfall, which is promising to deliver 3 times as much as either of those games, it only needs a short closed beta. Sure they "say" they have had profession beta testers testing the game, but honestly call major BS on that. A company that can't afford to hire more than 20 people to development and create their game can all of a sudden afford the army of professional testers it would take to fully test a game so complex. Come on.

Now don't get me wrong, if this game where to ever come out I would more than likely give it a chance, but with all the MMOs that have come out recently promising everything under the sun and delivering everything under my shoe, you think people would be a little more skeptical. But somehow the developers of Darkfall have got people hook line and sinker, tossing them scraps here and there for 8 years. Maybe it's the old school Sandbox guys clinging onto some hope that a true sandbox game will ever come out in a market dominated by linear MMOs, maybe it's the new school MMO guys clinging onto the hope that something different will come out in a sea of EQ/WoW clones, or maybe it's just a bunch of guys who think it's cool to like the game everyone hates.

Anyway, heres the short version... Don't get your hopes up. The game has been in development for over 8 years and for the past 4 or 5 years we have been getting promises of beta. If it happens great, but don't expect it to be the short closed beta they seem to think they are going to have, and don't think you will see a completed game in 2008.

Like I said, my hopes were up in 2001, so I have learned to not get too excited about DF, but with that video and the signups I can't help it. Hopefully given 7 years they can produce something not riddled with bugs and destined to fail.
