MMORPG: Any good ones in the works?

The last time I played a good MMORPG was SWG'sand I was "this close" to buying the complete package again on Steam. Then I remebered how the upgrade of the game killed it for me.

I WILL NOT PLAY WOW...period.

So what is the next BIG MMORPG coming out or is out currently?

The Old Republic will probably go live for open beta by fall (informed guess). Closed beta (well, the devs objected to calling it that, but that's what it looks like) signups started a few months back.

FYI it will be the opposite of SWG: not sandbox at all but heavily story- and character-driven, as all Bio games are.

edit: please read this interview from some months back -- it explains a lot of the new stuff Bio is doing for this game

The only one that I have my eye on right now is the Bioware Star Wars MMO. But, so many possible WoW killers have been buggy and/or crappy nightmares upon release that do not get good until about a year or more after the release, after almost everyone has left. They need longer development cycles / funding than most investors are willing to commit. Very high risk.

Personally I am concerned about old republic, I really want it to be great but I fear it will be WOW with light sabre's and a better story. I really want a mmo with 2 or 3 factions, pvp, free for all pvp and safe zones. Crafting to make good items and some form of consiquences for bad decisions plus some world shaping events every now and then.

y. I really want a mmo with 2 or 3 factions, pvp, free for all pvp . . .

MMOs that have free for all PVP usually suck because of the type of player they attract, the people who have no qualms about jumping someone 20 levels below them or roving around newbie zones at max level to score kills. If this is what you want, there are dozens of free to play MMOs with this sort of game play.

That's why I want safe zones too, I agree full pvp encourages too much clownery to be fun

I would prefer a MMORPG balanced for PVE, with no thought given to PVP.

I'll probably jump in on Star Trek Online when it launches in February, even though I am skeptical as to how it will work out long-term.

SW:TOR might be something I'll try when it is eventually released as well, but as others have stated, it is a polar opposite of Galaxies. I am hoping that by the time SW:TOR is released, maybe the SWG:EMU will be fully operational and have servers with thriving communities. I miss that kind of sandbox game and to my knowledge, no major MMO on the horizon can be reasonably construed as sandbox in nature.

Old Republic is what I'm waiting for. But I am seriously intrigued with Secret World whenever it comes out.

I bet Secret World will be an incredible looking game when it arrives, as it uses the AoC engine. AoC was fun when released and was gorgeous to look at, but the lack of content and bugs really killed the population in a hurry. So I am very skeptical of buying another Funcom game because of how AoC was initially handled.

Yeah I agree but I'm hoping they can learn from their mistakes.

The structure of Secret World is much different the most other MMO's so I'm hoping that will help the game

I agree funcom seems to mess up every mmo launch, they are two for two. Anarchy Online was a mess when it launched then Age of Conan. It too bad I kind of enjoyed the whack a mole combat and it looked great but there was no class balance and you could never get lost or move far from the paths in all the zones

What are you looking for in a MMO?

Do you want a large seemless one server world?

Do you want a player economy in which everything is player made?

Are you looking for a FFA PvP free loot game?

Do you want a skill based game or level based game?

It is hard to recommend a MMO for people if they do not list their preferences. I could recommend Ryzom or I could steer you to Darkfall Online or maybe Fallen Earth or EVE all of which has attracted many a SWG player.

Bioware isn't going to make FFA pvp MMO.

Is Aion still being played? Basically very similar to WoW with more emphasis on PVP, and the end game is supposed to be large un-instanced keep fights? More like a DAOC/WoW game is how I remember the pitch.

I didn't play it though.
