I transferred from Estrael back to Faeblight in the 5-minute window that the servers were up. If there are any ATers left playing on the Defiant side there, look me up and we can run some experts or something. I'm also going to be looking for a guild over the next few days, once I get myself settled with new soul talent builds and whatnot.

Ok I finally clicked on lupi's link and created an account. I haven't bought the game yet so still on trial. I'm guessing the $9.99 offer mentioned above is no longer? I couldn't find it anywhere.

Anyway, I started a Cleric to level 6 with almost all points on Inquisitor (following some guide posted somewhere). This seems ok so far. The reason I chose a Cleric is that my goal is to be a group healer at the higher level.

I'm thinking of a ranged dps with pet for the next character (warrior-beastmaster? can the pet tank for me a-la WoW's hunter?) and then a melee dps-type so Rogue-something. Last priority is the Mage, it's just not my thing. I only have 7 days so gotta be fast and try several things quickly. What's the limitation on the trial account? Too lazy to look it up earlier but probably will after this. Heh.

I bought and played Rift on a whim a couple of months ago.

I thought the interchangeability on the souls was a great idea, allowing for some great diversity in builds that WoW (which is of course the one game it's going to be compared to the most) lost, especially after 4.0 (iirc) dropped talent trees to 30-some-odd points. This also makes for some builds that are just outright sucky but that's a small price to pay for a comparative lack of homogenization. A downside I was experiencing to this was that having never gotten past level 20, I wasn't able to delve deep enough into each soul's tree to really feel the impact that my soul choices were having, both in terms of what souls and what talents I took in those souls.

I like that each form of Rift has its own style of portal and mobs. It's rather intimidating to approach a Water Rift and see a massive, tentacled beast loom above you. The idea of "global quests" was something I really liked in Warhammer Online, so the Rift system was a plus for me in that regard. That your rewards for closing a rift scale with your participation gives everyone there motivation to pull their weight, and was a great (if perhaps obvious) choice on the part of Trion. On the flip side, if a high-level character (even one just five levels above you) decided to step in, your comparative level of participation would drop through the floor and you'd get little, even if you stayed start to finish.

In the end the game felt "hollow" somehow. I can't describe it, but having played WoW off and on for three years I was almost getting that "uncanny" resemblance issue some people have with incredibly realistic CGI characters; it's almost bothersome how similar they are in gameplay despite their nuances, and my liking WoW quite a bit didn't help when my one month of gametime drew to a close.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this game, though. Given some time to mature it could become a great MMO.

main limitation on trial is that you can only level to I think ~16. If you can't find any selling for $10 still, I recall seeing at least as low as $19 within the last couple of days.

If you want a ranged DPS with a pet, then you need to go rogue. The rogue has the Ranger/Marksman souls. Ranger gives you different pets (wolf, boar, raptor, etc.) The Marksman gives you lots of ranged damage.

Me and my brother (50 and 47) are on Faeblight now. I'm going to be looking for a guild soon. I've got a few expert lures and two crafting lures I want to use.

Thanks. I haven't really looked into the details of the souls in the Warrior class, was just assuming that because the name Beastmaster sounds really close to WoW's Beast Mastery 🙂

I didn't play around with beastmaster too much on my warrior before going paladin/riftblade, but my impression was that the pet was just like a DoT with an extra agro radius and sporadic pathing issues.

Clerics can be fun. You can play support (backup heals, dps), tank, or healer. And there are more than one type of healer class that plays differently.

If you want ranged dps with a pet, get a rogue. The ranger/assassin combo is good dps and your boar pet can tank, or if in a group you can use the raptor pet for dps (or go saboteur). After you level a bit, you can also switch to a top notch tank with the rogue's riftstalker class. The rogue is also good for up close melee dps. Finally, there's the bard for support. All in all, a fine character choice to level up. Very versatile.

You didn't use my llnk!!

Best thing about pets is if you get a couple mobs on you and you have the healing ability the pet can side tank for you as multiple mobs in rift seems much more deadly than most mmos.

I'm level 50 rogue on Amardis.. have a mix of T1/T2 gear right now. My guild has cleared gsb (with me involved). Unfortunately I work in the nightlife so our raid nights are usually on my "weekend" and I often feel like having a life instead of raiding. That being said, I do get spots in raids when I do want to go.

So far the only T3 loot I have is the Emerald Dawn bow which is pretty sweet. Made a tank spec in order to maybe be able to run more instances.

I looooooooove that spec. So easy to do continuous pulls and never have any downtime (plus be near full hp!!)

Yeah, I gotta figure out a rotation. Not familiar with the game at all and haven't played WoW in like 4 years. Even then I was strictly a resto spec'd Druid.

Check the riftgame.com class boards, there is a lot of info on certain builds out there. I have 5 end game builds as a rogue right now and could easily have 4 more that I'd use for certain situations.

Rift digital trial upgrade is now $4.99 (collector's edition for $9.99).

This doesn't include game time but I guess it's a great time to get it. I'll probably grab the collector's edition for the mount. It's painful to have to run around without a mount.

By the time you're able to ride a mount, you should be able to afford the basic one at the vendor. I don't know if the CE mount is faster though.

As far as I know, the CE mount you can ride as soon as you can get to a mailbox (so level 6 maybe?), and it will match the speed of your fastest mount. Plus I forgot to mention about the 24-slot primary backpack which I think is huge for noobs like me 🙂

I haven't pulled the trigger yet because apparently you *have* to pay at least for a month of subscription while getting the digital upgrade. So it's more like $20 or $25 for the CE. I'll likely end up getting it. The sale is good for a week.

The CE mount is the same speed as the 1st tier mount - 60% speed. The only difference is that it's available to you just about as soon as you complete the "tutorial"/intro. The first purchasable mount is, however, not very far away from the first mailbox you find (just up over the hill). It will cost you 2.5 platinum though, which again, isn't terribly hard to acquire.

The main difference with the CE version is that you get the mount, essentially for free, on EVERY SINGLE character you roll. You also get a bigger bag, as mentioned.

yeah, money isn't hard to come by. i had over 300 plat before i quit, with nothing to spend it on.

Leveling isn't hard. Questing isn't hard. Taking on multiple mobs at the same time isn't hard. There really isn't a whole lot that takes a great deal of effort with this game.

I wouldn't say that Rift is too easy, after all it needs to be accessible for a wide range of players.

If you are a veteran group then you can always add difficulty yourselves by going for the achievements - some of the rapid assaults are brutal without cheating. Many of the expert rifts and raid rifts can be challenging when done with the minimum number of players, and the raids in general require both coordination and optimized specs.
