Spent 3 hours tonight butchering 3 chickens. Was it worth the effort? Hell yeah!! (I'd have said now 20 minutes ago.) BBQing up some chicken halves tomorrow; 4 halves is more than enough for 4 people. Took the 3rd chicken, skinned it (because I got sick of plucking when I was half done), then took the breast meat off. Divided that into 3 equal pieces for me and the kids. Took the rest of the chicken meat, tossed in some water, and started some homemade chicken noodle soup. I'll let that simmer for a day.

Diced up my chicken breast, about a pound of it, stir fried it, then added some frank's buffalo wing sauce; let it simmer a couple minutes, then finished it off with a bit of Baby Ray's bbq sauce. On the side, some fresh roma tomatos, topped with some fresh picked basil, a bit of mozzarella cheese (didn't make the cheese here; that's a future project), and some vinaigrette dressing.

First time I was able to do the veggies as well as the meat all home grown. 🙂

I'm just not good at plucking yet. Plus, they were pretty big. Well, not "big" - they are freaking huge for chickens; about the size of a small turkey.

Nope, no running around for a while. I hang them upside down. My son and his friend wanted to see what happens when you cut their head off - they flap around for a while and make a huge mess. The other two, I just carefully slit their throats with a really sharp knife. They never so much as flinched; just hung there calmly until they were dead. I'm pretty convinced they don't suffer by that method. (It's probably the equivalent to donating blood, except the donation doesn't stop.)

i know a couple who raises chicken for their own consumption. they say they will never go back to store bought chicken after seeing the difference between the two.

i saw chickens butchered once, and the guys chopped all their heads off and let them run around. as kids we thought it was funny, but looking back those guys were really jerks.

It's an awful lot of effort and barely saves any money, compared to what chicken sells for in the grocery stores these days. I have about 15 of the chickens bred specifically for meat left. I'm not sure if I'll ever buy any more of that breed. But, I have 70-75 other chickens that are dual purpose. They grow a lot more slowly, and they eat a heck of a lot less food. Once these 15 are gone, then I'll have to cull a few roosters. We have about 25, so probably about 20 of them will have to go. The 50 hens get to live and lay eggs.

lmao, I just realized that I never picked up the heads from the side yard. 3 heads and two feet are over there. That's not funny itself... I'm just trying to picture the neighbor's faces when their little 3-legged dog takes them home and leaves them on the porch. 🙂
Ehhh, it always rips open my garbage bags; let them suffer for it this once.

We had some chickens that we used for the eggs. After they stopped laying we butchered them. I hate plucking, its very time consuming and a PITA if you ask me. Dr. it my opinion there is no such thing as being good at it, you may get quicker but that will take years probably.

I once watched a cow get butchered, we raised them (just a few). I was involved in FFA and one project I had involved following the process. Talk about a mess and very time consuming. It was all done by hand.

Sounds good, but I personally could not butcher an animal. I would hire someone else to do it - it's
just too gross to think about gutting an animal that's only been dead for minutes

Home grown meats/veggies cannot be beat 😀

I miss teh food from the farm, i must say.

there are El Pollo locos out here in CA too.

I wonder if they're affiliated with the stores out here. There are about 6 of them scattered around the metro area. Very good, simple food. Chicken, fries and cole slaw; or double fries or double slaw.

Do the Cali EPRs have the two kinds of sauce? The creamy, light yellow green sauce and the green, chopped pepper sauce? I mix them up to create the ultimate dipping sauce.

EDIT: I'm a 'tard. I just realized you guys are talking about El Pollo Loco. The stores out here are called El Pollo Rico. That's what I get for imbibing libations and posting!
