MMMMMM torque

skyking

Lifer
I purchased a used truck to tow our 5th wheel, a 1996 Dodge ram 2500 Cummins with the locking torque converter.

Specs: 180 HP @2500 RPM, ho hum😱
420Ft/LB torque @1500 RPM Giddyup!:awe:
I drove it home from Montana and just flogged the heck out of it, 75+ wherever I could get away with it. Part of me wanted to see what kind of mileage I could get but it was outvoted by the part that wanted to get home.
19 MPG🙂

Better MPG than my car...
Not too shabby for 6200 lbs down the road, up two mountain passes, etc.
I guess it will get 14~16MPG with my 10,000 lb trailer behind it if I drive 60~65.
That's according to the previous owner and other sources.

MMMMM 30% worse power-to-weight ratio than a smart car. Giddyup! 🙂

I know it's not a fair comparison, but I just had to rub it in a bit. 😉

Those 12v cummins motors can be *seriously* tweaked for very little money. If you're looking for better MPG and a lot more power, a chip, exhaust, and intake can do wonders.

A bit unrelated, but people refer to this class of trucks as heavy or super duty vehicles. So then why is it that my work truck is classified as medium despite tare weight is about twice as much. My work truck is either Ford F-650 or International 4200 depending on which one is there when I need a vehicle.

I saw a guy in a lifted F350 or something like that with the double wheels on the back the other day just gunning it through traffic like it was a Porsche. In fact, he was doing it next to a Porsche. Black smoke puffing after every shift. Sounded loud as hell. I don't think he was getting 19 mpg driving like that, though 🙂

An F350 or Dodge Ram 3500 are both classed as light duty trucks. The "heavy duty" and "super duty" monikers are marketing phrases used to describe a class within a class.

No doubt. All those mods to make more power, suck more fuel. *If* I do anything at all, it has to be a mild change that does not puff any smoke. As it is I can't see anything in the mirror as it is stock( If I turn around while someone else is driving and hammers it, I can see a little bit) and I'd like to keep it that way.

Doesn't sound as bad as one I saw the other night.... It had vertical exhaust pipes behind the cab, and a big decal on the rear window that said "PUFF PUFF". When he accelerated it left a smokescreen that literally limited visibility for everyone behind him.

Update!

I have been busy working on the truck and trailer. Today it gets a major power upgrade, a new fuel plate in the bosch injection pump. This engine is all mechanical, no electronics on the pump.
This engine also has a ticking time bomb in it, a dowel pin that could possibly work loose and break things. It is called the Killer Dowel Pin, or KDP. Of course one could figure that after 14 years and 226,000 miles it is likely OK, but I'll be fixing it today as well.
I have the #8 kit in hand, 60lb valve springs, KDP kit.
Pacbrake and BD torqueloc, and mystery switch installed.
spring tool, tow mirrors and gauges are being delivered UPS today.
by noon I'll be KDPed, #8 plated, and waiting on the UPS driver

I'll snap some pics of my switch setup, I put it up by the OD off switch.

The BD autoloc has a feature that essentially turns off OD at startup. I like that feature and will keep it. I have 3.55s and drive about 20 minutes in any direction before I can go over 45 MPH. With the pacbrake and in 3rd, it slows down real nice. I already have 'jakebrain' and remember to flash brakelights

The transmission parts should be in tomorrow, and we'll yank the transmission for overhaul when they arrive.

We are doing a 3" drop on the rear axle by making my own shackles and drilling and dropping the front hanger 1". I have a digital angle gauge available to re-shim the driveline angles.

The # 8 fuel plate and boost elbow will take the engine from:
180 HP @ 2500 RPM
420 Lbs torque @ 1500 RPM
to
230 HP @2500 RPM
605 Lbs torque @ 1400 RPM

The engine is EPA certified to that power level and will pass emissions tests.
The transmission, on the other hand, will fold up like a house of cards😛

The Cummins Dodges amaze me on the gas mileage that can be pulled out of three ton bricks.
No kidding. We took our 5th wheel on the first trip to the beach property. I fueled up at each end and got 16 mpg on the way back home, towing a 10,000 pound load. I weighed the whole thing and it was right at 17,000 pounds.

OK that was fun. We had done some test passes with a g-meter performance computer before the mod. My old 5th wheel hitch is in the bed loose, and it stayed put.
After the mod it goes sliding back into the new hitch and stands up against it! The 60 foot times went down a half second alone. It pulls very nicely now🙂
