Pretty interesting. Never been a big candy person, but I do drink a lot of diet soda. Probably not great for your teeth either, but oh well.

There's a pretty huge difference between pH 1 and pH 2.2. They also could've mentioned that lemons are 2.3, limes are 1.8-2.0, and vinegar is about 2.0. Typical sensationalist media.

Nope, not according to the Mythbusters. The acid in cola can't rot teeth. I figure it's the same thing for these candies. The acid is far too weak. You'd probably have to be eating a hell of a lot of them constantly for it to do any damage.

This is taken from JADA, The Journal of the American Dental Association

"WAIT TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH AFTER DRINKING SODA

You should wait at least 30 minutes after drinking soda before brushing your teeth, said researchers at the German Association for Tooth Protection meeting on June 6.

At the annual meeting, Dr. Thomas Attin, director, Department of Operative Dentistry, Preventive Dentistry and Periodontology, Göttingen University, Germany, presented results of a study he and his colleagues conducted to determine the best time to brush teeth after consuming carbonated drinks.

Each of the 11 subjects wore a piece of toothlike material in a removable prosthesis for three weeks. They removed the prostheses in the mornings and evenings and soaked them in an acidic liquid similar to soda. Then each subject brushed his or her prosthesis with an electric toothbrush at a different interval after soaking.

After three weeks, researchers measured the thickness of the prostheses’ enamel layers. They found that less enamel was lost when subjects waited 30 minutes to an hour to brush the prostheses than when they brushed the prostheses within half an hour after soaking.

In an interview with Reuters Health, Dr. Attin said that tooth enamel appears to suffer less damage when brushing occurs after the tooth has had time to mount its own defense against acidic erosion.

"Acidic substances attack tooth enamel, and upper layers of the tooth can even be dissolved in some acidic drinks," he said. "However, protective agents in saliva may help repair and rebuild damaged tooth enamel."

LOL @ Mythbusters "authority" again...

Cumulative damage testing even with accelerated testing takes a while and even then one often interpolates results due to limited time...

A dill pickle never hurt anyone although I can think of ways to accelerate it greatly so its impact would leave just a little more than a big welt on one's so deserving behind. ;)

indeed... if i recall... Mythbusters didn't account for chewing/friction in their tests... acid + chewing action would leave a much more worn enamel coating versus just leaving the teeth in still acid

Yes soda pop is nasty stuff indeed! When one cannot find PB Blaster or Sea Foam Deep Creep around a bottle of Dr Pepper is surprisingly good at breaking loose a few corroded old nuts.

the battery terminals on my car had corroded. i poured some coke on, and magically they loosened almost immediately.

hooray science! :D

God I love sour candy. Luckily I hardly ever eat it, or my teeth would be a mess as you mention.
