I have/had a Dell 4550 for a while, but I think it's time to try out these Thoroughbred processors 🙂 I hope they OC good

MB AMDIKT333|EP-8K5A3+ EPOX 1 $66.75
CPU AMD|1700+ 1.4 ATHLONXP TBRED% 1 $58.00

Subtotal $124.75
Tax $.00
Shipping and Handling charge .00
Total $124.75
Address Verification Result: GOOD - Your Ship To address has been successfully confirmed. Your Order will be shipped in 1-2 business days.

I can't wait 🙂 Newegg rules

Edit:

I now have the system up and running. The specs are as follows.

Epox 8K5A3+ motherboard
512 mb PC2700 High Performance cas 2-2-2 Mushkin DDR
AMD XP 1700+ Thoroughbred

Here are a few different WCPUID screenshots that I have taken so far:

My first OC, modest, just seeing what would happen: OC1.JPG

The highest I got it to OC, boot into windows, and last in windows: OC2.JPG
- Note, Prime95 failed the first test it tried w/ this 😉 but IE ran fine, and so did Trillian

The OC I am currently running at, and am in the process of testing: OCtesting.JPG
- Note Prime95 is running awesome, on test # 1195 and flying through them w/out any errors.
- Also, I will let Sysmark run through a few times, and some 3DMark too

Oh, and my current voltages are as follows (still need to be tweaked down a bit I am thinking, since they are sky high right now):
CPU Voltage: 2.055 <--\
Ram Voltage: 3.2 <----- Thank goodness for Epox HUGE OCing voltage options 🙂

How does that OC look 🙂?

so did they ever find out for sure if these were multiplier locked? No one seems to really know.

I will keep you posted on that 😉 I will be unlocking it if not

I should have some info for you on that by friday.

WHy the conversion? Do you expect the new Athlon you purchased to be faster than a P4 2.4b running DDR333? 😕

More stable? Than an Intel mobo? 😕

Please help me understand.. 🙂

Couldn't have said it better myself 🙂

Dell computers are boring, there's no tweaking you can really do... I purchased High performance Mushkin 512 mb DDR pc2700 cas 2-2-2 for a reason 😉

Ok, thanks for the explanation.. I'm getting old, and I'm past the overclocking/tweaking stage, and value killer stability.. 😀

Actually, one problem I have had the whole time with my Dell 4550, but didn't have with the AMD setup previous, is if I maximize a window on my second monitor (the one hooked up the the DVI/analog converter on the Radeon 8500 128 mb Retail) the whole system always froze :-\ It would be nice to not have to deal with that again.

Riiiiiiiiight..

The majority of the failures listed on that thread are from people running a LOT of juice through their processors, using a hard-wire voltage pin mod. VERY few that fail when overvolting using motherboard resources. People running 1.6GHz-rated CPUs @ 2.7GHz is what I call an extreme overclock, and it's amazing as many last as long as they do.

AMD's failure rate is MUCH higher than any INtel P4 product.

Your argument is baseless.

Today is the magical day my CPU comes 🙂 Newegg is the best... my mobo got here today, and the CPU will be here tomorrow, when I ordered both on tuesday

yummy 🙂

Josh

Oh yea, and also, after further research and reading, I kinda wish I had opted for a 1800+ t-bred, since people are pulling off 2 GHZ + with those bad boys on the AIUGA stepping... but I will see how I do tomorrow 🙂

whats six months, an era?

HAHA that was awesome...

To me, in terms of technology "a while" is defined as the amount of time it took me to lose interest in the product.... Though this definition varies from item to item, and person to person, having a computer system built by someone other than me for more than a month is "a while."

Hope that answered your question 🙂

i think overclocking can be perfectly stable, as long as you don't get too adventurous and you have good cooling.

but, on the other hand, you can purchase a dell these days that will be faster than an amd even if the amd is overclocked, and it will still be cheaper. heck, a bunch of people bought 70 dollar complete systems last week. thats f'n insane. you can't get a decent video card for that much. granted, that was a fluke, but it is almost common now to get a dell for around 4 - 500.

Yea, but OCing is fun, and the dell system didn't even let me optimize the timings on my ram 🙂

that's cool and all, but.... why exactly is this thread in OT? 😕

uhh.. cause it was originally just stating that I was switching back to AMD, but now that I updated it could technically belong in another forum... it was already here though 🙂

thats a lot of volts

Yep, this mobo definately kicks some ass... I have never owned one previously that supported such high voltages...

I will eventually tune them down, but that was what was needed for the system to boot/ run in windows at the highest point of my OCing

It is too bad that there aren't any other AGP/PCI dividers, or a lock to set it at 66/33, because the highest fsb i could do was 210, past that the video card started looking choppy. Hopefully they will add that in a BIOS update 🙂
