MMC = SD memory card?

If it's compatible, then what's the difference? Why create it in the 1st place?

which is better? which should i get for my cheapo digital camera, which says uses SD card but came w/a mmc card?
 
An SD card is 1mm thicker than the MMC i believe. They also have a little tag to allow them to be writeprotected much like a Floppy disk if Im remembering my memory cards correctly.

I think SD came after MMC as well.
 
SD is basically a replacment for the older MMC. SD is more secure than MMC, (hence the name "SECURE digital"), as it has two extra pins for some sort of parity checking. SD also supports a faster data transfer rate.

Old devices which require MMC cards often wont work with SD cards, but almost all SD devices will work with MMC cards. If you are buying a new card, and your camera supports SD, then buy SD. The price should be the same, but even if it's a few more dollars, get the SD, for the speed and security.

Just go for the SD. MMC cards are a lot harder to find in stores, and they will usually cost more just because they are not as common as the SD cards. I've got a couple of Nokia phones that ONLY take MMC, and they are a PITA to find memory for.
