<< GL, what kind of computer is this??
as u know much of the encoding process is done on the CPU, though I believe u when u say that they sped things up (the video card can and does help out by offloading the CPU from decoding the incoming signals), but I'd like to know what kind of CPU power u were running.
FULL 720x480 in MPEG2? that's some sweet stuff! >>
Get this...I don't even have a super duper computer😉
I've got a P3 800 o/c to 960 (120MHz FSB) with PC133 SDRAM on an Asus CUV4X (Via Apollo Pro 133a) running Windows 2000 SP2 w/ DX 8.1. Apparently the codec or MMC itself has been holding back the recording potential - ATI did originally state a 700MHz P3 would be sufficient to do 720x480 MPEG-2 capture but they've finally delivered on this promise.
I have found a bug though. The new ATI VCR format is simply a modified MPEG-2 capture format. It actually even records the closed captioning subtitles! However, I can only get proper playback with this format. If I record straight to MPEG-2 and playback the file, my audio's pitch is distorted. This problem was present in MMC 7.2 as well. Apparently it's a SBLive/VIA issue but it'd be nice to get it resolved. I think the problem is on the playback end because when I convert a .vcr file to a .mp2 the audio is distorted in the .mp2 file whereas it is fien in the .vcr file. It's not a big issue for me since I use my AIW as a tivo so I don't archive the files, but it could cause problems for others who wish to archive to .mp2 format.
Here are some other added features I've come across (i'll continue from the first list):
6) You can now set the max file size for a recording. For example, if you set it to 700MB CDR, when you record, the MMC will record up to 700MB in one file and if it still must record, it'll create additional files each being no larger than the max size you've requested. This is sort of like AVI/IO functionality.
7) In TV-on-Demand mode, you can watch the live video feed AND your time-delayed video feed simultaneously. This is one of those small features that can come in very handy - i.e. if I've paused the TV for only a minute or two watching a basketball game, I can take a look at the live feed to see if I should even bother watching in a time-delayed fashion or just skip to the live feed.
8) Motion-activated video capture. I'm not sure exactly what this is, but I assume you could hook a camera up to your AIW Radeon and the AIW would start recording only if it detected movement within a video frame - great for a security camera setup.
9) The DVD Player which is now at version 7.5 now has some new features. I'm not terribly familiar with the audio side of things but I think it will now decode Dolby Digital 5.1 and downmix it to stereo. You can also tell the DVD player to pass the audio through to another audio device such as the onboard Rage Theatre Audio chip.
10) There's a new Library program which I find not very useful but others may. It just lists your media files. However, it has to be used to convert ATI VCR files (.vcr) to standard MPEG-2 (.mp2) files. The VCR file format seems to be a superset of the MPEG-2 format, so conversion is extremely fast as no re-encoding seems to be done - just reformatting of the physical file layout I believe.
