how is it ultimate when you have a weight class? in the end, There can only be one!

wait.. 8 man bracket. 3 ten min rounds. winner of each round would advance to the next. (ie: 8, 4, 2)

that sounds awesome!

wonder why they stopped that and switched to whatever the owner of the UFC would pick to fight the champion?

Because SEG, the original owners we're going bankrupt because no state athletic commission would sanction their fights and it was getting a ton of negative publicity. Three fights in one night is taxing on the fighters and a few had to withdraw because of injuries.

To survive the UFC under Zuffa agreed to unified rules so they could be sanctioned in states like Nevada, which untimately saved the company.

Some of the old fights were classics, but for all the Shamrock vs. Kimos and Gracie vs. Severns in the UFC's history, there were an equal amount of fights where guys would just tire and it would be a huge soozefest because of no time limits or weight classes.

Besides, Zuffa had a choice - Fight under unified rules (weight classes, rounds with time limits) or stick to the no-holds-barred tournament format and go out of business. I think they made the right choice.

lol but (i forget the fighters) they one bought where you had a 400+lb guy against one like 220 was great. watching a little guy kick the big guys ass was a classic.

Also no rules means there was nut shots. wich happened a few times too hehe

was it against some sumo wrestler?

yeah i think so. i can't remember.

the little guy just ran in hit and ran out. then leg kicks etc. finally the big guy fell and the little one just kept nailing him.

it was great heh

AHA! found it! GREAT FIGHT!

That little dude has BALLZ. Not the greatest fighter but very courageous.

And I agree, Lesnar looked like 385.

if there a big diff between fighting 3 guys/nite at 10min each guy vs fight 1guy for 25min

3 ten min rounds (30min) vs 5 five min rounds (25min)?

After the weigh in they can weigh whatever. I remember them saying that Alves was 207 for the GSP fight.

they cut a lot

i'm a LOW body-fat welter weight (~147lb class), and seeing all the W.W. boxing matches with guys about similar height, there is no way they are at listed weight. esp with all the muscle mass

3 ten min rounds (30min) vs 5 five min rounds (25min)?

Even a 30 second rest even after 3 minute rounds of sparring is a huge factor in keeping fighters fresh, 25/30 minutes of nonstop action is very taxing on fighters. Not to mention you can get injured in any one of those 10 minute fights and if you won, still have to fight. Fighters now get put on medical suspensions just like boxing, even if they win they're suspended form combat or combat training depending on their injury.

I think it stems from the athletic commissions view that when a fighter is spent physically a greater chance for injury may occur and thus the intermissions between rounds were instituted like boxing and standardized (Unified Rules). It's all about being able to hold events in states.

Pride did it (and DREAM might, I haven't seen a DREAM show) with one 10-minute round and 1 - 2 five minute rounds, depending on the title. Just like the UFC did now - if they wanted to fight Stateside, they had to switch it to three five-minute rounds to be able to put the show on.

I attended 3 early UFC's including the one where Manny Yarbrough flung Keith Hackney through the cage door. Awesome spectacle to say the least. it was actualluy held in a gymnasium in Charlotte where some women's basketball team practiced. I was fortunate to see Royce Gracie when he was THE Ufc man to beat.

Peace

B/c they "cut weight"

Don't listen to people that say the cut 25 pounds though. Anderson Silva may "walk around" at like 215, but a month or two out from a fight they diet and train and get to maybe 200, then a day before the weigh-ins they poop a lot, don't eat much, and then cut 10-15 pounds of water weight to make 185.

Weighins are the day before the fight, which means they drink a ton of fluid and eat some food and gain 15-18 pounds back.

I do wish they would have under 145. WEC has some awesome fighters in that area.
I've been getting to catch a lot of those on Versus HD. The Mike Brown v. Urijah Faber rematch a while back, was shaping up to be a great one, till Urijah broke his hand up.

It looked like some one put a tennis ball under the skin, it was so badly swollen.

UFC owns WEC and intentionally leave it as a free showcase of lightweight fighters.

Thay have to cut weight to make the title defense. After the weigh in they usually put back 15 lbs or so on, so they are actually fighting at a heavier weight. Most of the weight they lose is water weight, so they have to be careful that they do not dehydrate themselves. Joe Rogan was saying that Lesnar walks around at about 290 or so. He works out heavy prior to the fight and loses about 20 lbs or so during his workouts then loses the extra before the weigh in by hitting the sauna or what ever else he uses to sweat the weight off.

Anderson Silva is another example. He supposedly walks around at 210 or so and cuts 25 lbs just to make weight. Obviously he is much bigger than some of his opponents who fight at a "natural" 185. Lesnar is like that too.

Peace

yeah i heard he walks around at around 290. Being a wrestler for so many years cutting that weight should be easy for him and without the stress ti does for most. either at 260 or 290 he is one scarry looking dude.

i so want Lesnar to face Fedor (doubtfull) or even Shane Carwin. Shane at least is about the same size.

This could happen. I think the winner of Carwin vs Velasquez is supposed to fight Lesnar next. I hope Carwin wins this one, and fights Lesnar, and have Fedor fight Lesnar if UFC signs him. I can wait on Velasquez because he's younger than the other guys.
