from espn- According to The New York Post, the Mets are moving toward dealing starter Kris Benson to the Orioles for reliever Jorge Julio.

ha awesome.. its been an exciting off season so far.

In fact..Omar has just made another move! Mets get catcher Paul LoDuca from the Marlins for 2 minor leaguers (Gaby Hernandez being one of them).

Now here's the thing.. do they keep him? LoDuca is a solid player when healthy but the Diamondbacks were inquiring about him a few days ago. Javier Vasquez wants out of Arizona so does Omar now trade LoDuca for Vasquez straight up?

If that happens then I see the Mets getting rid of Benson since some teams are interested in him. Why trade Benson though when you see bums like Paul Byrd now getting 7 million a year and Benson is much better than Byrd. Benson's contract could now be considered a bargain in this insane offseason market.

Lets see what Omar has up his sleeve this week at the GM winter meetings in Texas.

I'm a huge mets fan, but I can sense that the Braves are once again going to win the division.

Mets should definitely keep LoDuca. He's a good player, and the Mets need a catcher. Vazquez has shown already that he can't get the job done in NY. Even if he could, why trade away one need for another? You need a catcher, you need pitching. Trading one for the other doesn't solve anything.

I agree. After seeing Vazquez crap out with the Yanks and complain in Arizona I totally question the mental aspects of Javy. He always had the arm but he is simply weak in the head and cannot take pressure. He has whined a ton the past couple of years too.

LoDuca is a fine catcher and a brooklyn boy so I'm sure he'll be excited to play in his home town.

How does LoDuca compare to the 2 catchers the Mets were interested in pursuing via free agency?

Worse than either of them IMO.

Giving up Hernandez for LoDuca when you could sign either FA Catcher without giving up a prospect makes little sense. I don't know much about Hernandez, but I hear he's one of the Mets top prospects.

Damn straight. The Mets are making some moves and they plugged 2 huge holes (first base and closer). I hear Mark Grudzielanek may be signed on thursday and he is a DRAMATIC upgrade over Kaz Mutsui...then again anyone is an upgrade but still. Lots to be optimistic about!

Yea..he's worse than both but still a very solid catcher. I would have preferred the younger Hernandez who worked really well with Rick Peterson and the "Big 3" in Oakland.

As for giving up prospects my friend asked me to name the top Mets prospects who made it big the past 20 years. Reyes and Wright are excluded since they are just starting. You have Jason Bay, AJ Burnett....umm... need some help. Hernandez was a decent prospect in a fairly thin Mets minor league system. The true chip the Mets are keeping a tight grip on is Lastings Milledge who is asked about by every team.

I know nothing of him but I know that every Japanese player that wears a Mets uniform stinks up the joint. Though Shinjo wasn't so bad his first go around with the team.

I think the Mets need to give up on Japanese players or just sign ones that other teams have a high interest in.

Look at it this way... this guy appears to be insurance of sorts for our rotation and a possible middle reliever. He can POSSIBLY SPOT start, provide long relief, provide short relief.

If he's a bust, well we wasted 750k. Wish it woulda came my way :)

yeah...we find random Japanese players, look at this guys stats-

6-7 with a 3.35 ERA in 20 starts and eight relief appearances last season with the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan's Pacific League

this guy didnt even have a winning record in Japan!

I didn't realize Jason Bay was from the Mets - I know he was in the Padre system when he was traded to Pitt, he must have been sent to SD from the Mets then?

Other Mets' prospects who have made it? Bill Pulsipher....err..nope.....Paul Wilson....err...nope......Jason Izzringhausen, several years later....wasn't there a 4th pitcher in that group?

Shall I bring up Kazmir?

Jason Bay was drafted by the Expos then was traded to the Mets who in turn traded him, another minor leaguer and Bobby Jones to the Padres for Steve Reed (ugh) and some minor leaguer.

As for other prospects making it from the Mets..mmmmm.. not many at all. Right now there is Wright and Reyes and everyone is asking for this Lastings Milledge kid.

...and don't bring up Kazmir. :|

Jason Bay was never a sure shot. Our current GM traded him to the mets for Lou Collier. He was hardly thought of to be as good as he was until he made it to the pads... who turned around and shipped Bay and Ollie Perez for Brian Giles. . . . looked like the steal of a century, Bay being younger than Giles and possibly more upside (maybe more hr's and less avg)... ollie perez a strikeout pitcher with ace makeup. However ollie was hurt most of last year. what a waste of a fantasy draft pick

he is/was a FA or nontendered back at the deadline... someone, i think washington may have signed him... at least i believe they had interest in him.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT!

who remembers when he (or it could have been toca), relayed the ball from the OF into the seats behind the visitors on deck circle?

EDIT: He was on the Nat's got nontendered and resigned the same day at a lower price i'd assume:

Nationals re-signed outfielder Alex Escobar to a minor league contract.
Escobar, who did not play last year due to a quad injury and foot surgery, is going to need to work his way back to the majors in Triple-A. He would seem to have little in the way of potential at this point.

Dec. 21, 2005 - 1:19 am et

Nationals non-tendered outfielder Alex Escobar.
The Nationals might re-sign Escobar, but they still will have gotten absolutely nothing in return for Jerry Owens.

ahhh.. the so called 5 tool prospect Alex Escobar. I remember him!

Doing a bit of research finds that he was traded from the White Sox to the Nationals before the 2005 season so he's still in the minors. I remember many were raving about him..and Alex Ochoa..remember him too?

Thank goodness both Reyes and Wright (especially Wright!) are looking like the real deals.

one of my favorite random Mets moments, I was at a game a couple years ago and some guys in front of me were remembering old Mets and each trying to outdo the other remembering players and then this came up

Guy1- "Bill Pecota!!!"
Guy2- "That Guy Sucked!"
Guy1- "But God-Damn could he Bunt!"
