MLB HOF: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa on ballot

They Live

This will be very interesting.

Bonds
Clemens
Sosa
Palmerio
Mcgwire

All linked to steroids in some form.

Then there's Piazza and Bagwell, whom there is no proof juiced, but face suspicion any way.

every single one of them will never be inducted, ever. period. its not going to happen. it would destroy baseballs name even worse.

I think down the line at the very least Bonds and Clemens will get elected. Also, unless evidence surfaces that Piazza juiced, I suspect he will get in as well.

every one of those guys deserves to be in the hall of fame. if those guys arent in the hall of fame, it really doesnt have much meaning. i have nothing against dudes juicing, if it makes the game more exciting, im all for it

If PED's are still illegal and banned from the game then none of those guys belongs, even Piazza and Bagwell.

Now if you want my actual opinion on this, I think they should allow PED's and our government should legalize their use under doctor's supervision. I also think they should just allow it in all sports, because right now the only people getting screwed are the people who follow the law...and that's just fucked up.

Bonds has to be in, stop his career at '94 and he's still in.
Clemens too.
Sosa and McGwire have surprisingly mediocre career stats, definitely not HOF material. Palmiero is fringe.
But I guess if Joe Jackson and Pete Rose are never getting in, these fellows might have difficulty too.

Agree for the most part.

Sosa, batting wise is ok. But if you add in other aspects like defense, he falls short vs the average RF. From BR JAWS Hall of fame comparison, Sosa is well below an average RF's WAR:

Right Field (18th), 54.8 career WAR/42.2 7yr-peak WAR/48.5 JAWS
Average HOF RF (out of 24) = 69.5 career WAR/41.3 7yr-peak WAR/55.4 JAWS

McGwire is a little closer since his primes qualify but overall still below average:
First Base (16th), 58.7 career WAR/40.1 7yr-peak WAR/49.4 JAWS
Average HOF 1B (out of 18) = 62.3 career WAR/40.7 7yr-peak WAR/51.5 JAWS

Palmeiro is above the avg due to longevity but his prime was below average:
First Base (13th), 66.1 career WAR/36.6 7yr-peak WAR/51.3 JAWS
Average HOF 1B (out of 18) = 62.3 career WAR/40.7 7yr-peak WAR/51.5 JAWS

Since I live in Houston, a lot of people are saying Bagwell will get in this year - no questions.

I've been out of baseball for a while, but I can see it happening.

This.

Still think it's a travesty that Pete Rose can't get in.

I've always been a huge fan of Rose and find it greatly hypocritical for the commissioner to turn his back on players using peds for so many years yet hold Rose up as a symbol of compromising the game. Aside from his post-playing career betting, he was a symbol of the ultimate competitor, who game 100% to the game and as a result was one of it's best players ever.

Bonds was an epic douchebag, but a great player. I blame the commissioner for the ped scandals as much as the players. There is so much pressure to perform and the rewards are too high for the ones that do to blame many for succumbing to the assistance peds offered. If the HOF banned players that cheated, they'd probably have to get rid of 1/2 the pitchers for scuffing up or greasing the baseballs.

Gambling is worse than PEDs when it comes to sports. PEDs are people trying to be better than others, gambling leads to point shaving, mafia influence, throwing games etc. It has far worse implications on a sport than people trying to be better than the other guys.

Although one is illegal in society and the other isn't(or is it?). That's maybe partially what hangs some people up too, the whole legality thing.
For the record, Barry Bonds is my favorite player ever, by far. Didn't like him when he talked, but what he did on the field won't be done for a long long time. His OBP/OPS was so sick, I wish I would've been playing fantasy sports when he played, would've traded my whole team for just him.

That's way too much to hold Pete Rose responsible for.

Both are bad, period. If taking steroids wasn't bad or illegal, why did they try to hide and lie about it?

Hehe, I respect you today jjsole, I respect you.

*bro hug* 😉

Beyond the legitimate issue of gambling and that it should have no place inside the game, players or coaches, Rose has paid dearly for his sins by being banned for decades.

He may have proved he has some douchebag in him with his book and late confessions etc., but our sports hero's don't have to be our personal hero's. Many times their 'neurosis' are what made them successful and such great competitors.
