I have two friends from junior high/high school that got drafted out of HS. They made it to AA (Yankees, Rangers) before their respective careers ended in 2008/2006. Both are college graduates - the guy who played for the Roughryders (Rangers AA) works for them now.
They both didn't regret the path they took - playing in the majors may have been a stretch, regardless of college experience. Either you are good enough and work your way up, regardless of being drafted out of Hs or college - or you're not.
The kid is a man now and should make his own decision. He can either travel, gaining experience and/or riding the pine at a higher level, hoping to move up, or go to college and play ball there at the organized level, hoping to gain additional experience and perhaps being drafted higher a later year, albeit, at the risk of injury to himself. Neither path guarantees him a shot...it's just a foot in the door. Whether he's good enough in the long run to make it to the majors - that's a whole different story.
