MLB 2010: The Show

If we do short seasons, I'd be interested in joining a league. I'm worried about my clearwire connection causing too much lag to play others online though, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Yeah, I'm not sure of all the options, but I don't think anyone wants to play a full 162 game season (that's the normal length, right?). I am thinking around 20 games with the goal being 1 to 2 games per week.

I was the commissioner of the AT Madden league this year and we had a lot of communication problems. It is fine if games can't be played, but you have to communicate with your opponent and commissioner. So I would hope that for the most part, anyone playing would be dedicated to finishing the season and communicating if/when they couldn't play their games. So far, I think there are only 3 or 4 of us who have expressed interest in a league and I would imagine we'd probably want at least 10 players to make it happen.

I was thinking about making a post asking about interest in an Anandtech Sports League to handle all of these leagues in the future. Maybe we could all submit our interest levels for certain sport games, elect commissioners, and build a database of interested users along with their gamer tags, console type, sports interests, etc. Not sure if that would work either.

Ok, I am about to give up and put this game up on eBay or sell it at Gamestop. No matter what I do, I can't seem to hit the damn ball and I can only seem to pitch well for a couple of innings before they start hitting everything off of me. It is incredibly frustrating and fielding seems ridiculously unrealistic to me. There is no way they are going to keep hitting balls conveniently into gaps and there is no way some of those gaps exist.

I downloaded the MLB 2K10 demo and was pleasantly surprised. It doesn't look as nice as The Show, but it was pretty fun to play and I could actually hit.

Just picked this up yesterday...

I agree with everyone complaining about the hitting. It's pretty hard! I haven't played a baseball game in years though so I may be a little rusty.. WHICH IS ALL THE MORE REASON THEY NEED TO PUT IN A TUTORIAL!!! Like spring training drills or something, not just those "quick tip" pop-ups in game. But something that you go through before you even get to the main menu (option to skip of course) that actually TEACHES you how to play. (Yes, there is practice to practice, but I want someone to teach new players how to play)

I've got lots of free time so I'm happy to plug away 'til I get the hang of it, but yeesh. Timing is important, I get it. But if I'm going to commit to my swing earlier I run into the problem of not knowing where it's going to be in the zone... leading me to chase a lot of fastballs out of the zone...

EDIT: Haha, first at bat after I post this and I hit a pinch-hit 3 run homer! My first ever!! WOOOOOHOOOOO! 😀

haha nice. i will admit at first i found it near impossible to hit. it's funny because my best friend can hit the living daylights on this game but the pitching frustrates him so much. now that i dont understand, ive found pitching to be a cinch. but i improved by using the technique i detailed above, guess fastball a lot and if you're wrong just sit on the off-speed. sure they'll sneak a 2-seamer or a cut by you every so often, but you also start to see the ball better and guess where the pitch is going. i still swing at terrible pitches, but ive cut down drastically from swinging at everything. road to the show and playing a lot of games helped out immensely also. good luck to those having trouble, with practice you'll get the hang of it.

I've been doing 100 to 200 practice bats per night (though I didn't have time tonight). I am doing well with batting now, but I need to work on pitching next as I do struggle.

I agree with speg as well. A tutorial would be nice. The manual is also awful and needs work. But I still think it is a fun game.

Going to bump this old thread since most people do not care about this game it seems, so a new thread would not be worthwhile.

I picked this up used for ten bucks on Friday, since I still play the '08 release here and there, I thought ten bucks would be worth it for the updates and it is so far.

However, when it comes to hitting this has to be the most difficult game I have ever played. With '08 all I did was create an RTTS pitcher and played that forever and did really well with it, getting to the majors and becoming an ace. This time I made a hitter and wow, I can barely hit anything.

My guy is in AA ball and for the season I have a .102 average with 3 RBIs and like 60 strikeouts (zero walks too). I lowered it to Rookie, raised all of my sliders to max, lowered all of the CPU sliders to minimum and I still cannot hit anything. Anyone have tips? It's getting to the point where it's not very fun since I can't just relax and play, I need to focus intently to have any hope of even getting close to hitting anything.

Anyway, looks and sounds great, and I enjoy fielding and baserunning, but the hitting is becoming tiresome. 🙁

Wow, that describes my experience with MLB 08 and MLB 10 exactly.

I'm in my sixth year of my pitcher RTTS in MLB 08 and I figured I'd give MLB 10 a shot. I ended up selling the game two weeks after I bought because hitting was just too difficult in 10. I figured that I'd rather keep all my progress on my RTTS and season on 08 than suffer through my hitting issues.

Good luck, I don't really have any tips for you, I just too couldn't get the hang of it. Just when I felt like I had the hitting down, the timing seemed to change.

Well I can't decide whether it's a good or bad thing that we had the exact same experience. 😀

I'm going to keep toughing it out for a while, but yeah, just when I think I am starting to make progress, at least making some contact, I end up having an 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts game.

Heck, I even paid a couple of bucks to buy some training points in an attempt to get some help, but it did nothing. :\ I don't understand how they can make something this difficult and no way to get around it. I'm not saying I think I should be hitting .500 or something, but damn, give me something.

I played it a couple of times when I got it, but put it down to play other things and haven't picked it up since. Hopefully I'll get back into it pretty soon. This was my first baseball purchase since MLB 2K7 so I think it will last me a few years too.

I've played through multiple seasons in RTTS as a hitter in '08, '09, and '10. While the jump from '08 to '09 was shocking when it came to hitting, once I had '09 down, moving to '10 took only a couple of days to get the hang of the timing. My '10 RTTS outfielder is a career .400 hitter. '09 and '08 hitters were pretty similar.

I play on rookie for hitting. I noticed the difference in hitting ability to seem more realistic in '10. I was able to hit more home runs earlier in my career by far when compared to '09. I don't have any tips on hitting, but it's basically just timing on rookie. You don't have to use the left thumbstick at all.

You do have to be patient at the plate. While I've hit my fair share of first-pitch home runs, you're usually better off taking a pitch or two if it's not in your wheelhouse. It's definitely difficult to lay off pitches, but after a while you kind of get the hang of it. It's still a very rare feat for me to draw a walk. Don't go up to bat and swing at the first three pitches no matter what.

Good tips, thanks man. I do end up down 0-2 pretty damn often, then I quite often just take the 3rd pitch, which seems to workout a good chunk of the time. It's so freaking hard to lay off pitches though, particularly when you barely have any time to react.

Does training actually do anything besides help you hit your training goals? I did not see a difference even though I spent about 4,000 points on training all in one go. :hmm:

How did you have 4000 traininig points? I spend them to meet progression goals as I get them (in 40-point chunks).

Both training points and the hitting training sessions help improve your abilities, whether they are power and contact ratings, or clutch, vision and discipline (check swing ability, I think) ratings. Power and Contact ratings will most directly impact your performance on the field (as your timing improves) but vision should really help too so you can get to pitches further around the plate.

The one thing I don't like is that the practice mode doesn't let you hit for more than a 20-pitch session. But it is a good option to improve your timing. Trying the HR derby would also be a decent practice mode. Of course, neither of these modes will let you use your created RTTS player. 🙁

I purchased the points through the store. :$ I was desperate because I was something like 1 for 60 at that point. It may have helped slightly, but it did not really feel like much..

I focused on contact for the most part; mainly just working on the Hitting Coach stuff.

I do find it very annoying that you cannot use your RTTS guy to do the practice sessions and it seems the in-season sessions happen very rarely.

Is there any point in doing the warm-up before games? Seems kind of useless since they are just lobbing the ball at you. :hmm:
