Mixing up Memory

I have an older computer that has a stick of 512 mb Memory.

Would it be okay if I added a 1 gig stick whie keeping the 512 stick in?

It depends on the make/model of your motherboard.
Not all motherboards support 1GB modules.

If you are not sure what the motherboard is visit www.crucial.com and run the system scanner.

This should tell you what RAM modules your system can take.

My Mother board is perfectly fine with 1gig sticks

But, can there be a detrimental effect on Ram speed if you have a gig stick ram and a 512 stick of ram on the motherboard at once?

Most MB's default to 333 Mhz but may run at the slowest chips speed if lower. There is no risk to the MB other than potential instability though.
