Mixing SATA and IDE

I was just curious about whether or not i could use a SATA drive as my primary drive and then also use 2 IDE drives as slave drives for more storage. Sorry if this is a really simple question but i dont know much about SATA.

so it does not matter what type of motherboard im thinking of getting? if it supports SATA then i can do this?

Well, obviously you will need to have both IDE and SATA support. Thats pretty common on boards that have SATA though. If not you could get a card for whichever the board does not support.

yup that will work fine

my motherboard has both sata and ide ports. my boot (main) harddrive is sata, and i have another harddrive on the ide

Yep it will work fine,I have an IDE drive for booting xp and a sata raid for gaming...In fact on this mobo(ASUSp4c800-e) you can have an amazing ten drives working together,2 sata in raid,2 sata in parrellel or seperate,2 ata raid drives and 2 ide ports which in master and slave would take 4 more drives.You might want to save one slot for optical though..This is really an amazing mobo.
