Mixing RAM

Is it possible to mix RAM with different timings/brands? What are the pro's and cons of doing this? Not sure if i want to go AMD or Intel for my video editing machine... would it matter with either?
 
The disadavantage is the RAM can only run as fast as the slowest stick. Advantage is more RAM of course. Intel/AMD doesn't matter as long as you don't have Intel's Rambus RAM.
