Mixing Memory Sizes

Hi, I have a set of 2x8GB and 2x4GB memory G.SKILL memory. Both run at the same speed. Can I use them in the same motherboard? If so, what layout should I use? I assume 8,4,8,4 but not sure. Thanks.

David

they should work fine together if there rated the same v
keep the sticks in the same channels they would normally run

Just to clarify OP's speculation and Dasa2's response.

First, convince yourself that the two kits have the same timings, speed and voltage. Or -- they are essentially the same model-code, same latency specs, same speed and voltage.

Put the 2x8 kit in the corresponding pair of slots. The slots should have the same color on the motherboard. Put the 2x4 kit in the other pair of slots.

It will work but I think it will stop them from working in double channel mode which will reduce their speed by half. You may or may not notice it but if i were you I would just get more of the same ram I have seeing as 8 gigs is probably the sweet spot for ram.

May or may not work, no guarantee they will even play together. Try them (from CPU) 8GB sticks in 1-3 and 4GB in 2-4, prob will need to set manually (and start by raising the DRAM voltage + 0.05), any problems give me a holler

On my 3770k I am using 2x8 of crucial vlp at 1.35v and 2x4GB of gskilll at 1.5v.
I set the voltage at 1.40 volts and all is fine.
On my old i7-930 I have 3x2gb of gskill pi 1600 and 3x4 gskill sniper 1600 no problems.
I never found different sticks that could not work together.
I try to keep clear of 1.65 volt memory.
