Mixing memory a god idea?

I got 2 64mb - 133 at compUSA (The ones that were free after mail in) They are PNY. I want to get another 256mb. Is it a good idea to get the crutial(sp!) or is the PNY going to hold me back an not let me use the crutial(sp!) great quality I have been hearing from other board memers.

Thanks
Cosmo

As long as you aren't overclocking, it shouldn't matter. PC133 should be completely compatible nowadays.

Don't be positive about that........I have a system running 384mb Crucial Cl2 PC133 and tried adding both Infineon & Mosel........each would run seperately but not in conjunction with the Crucial 384mb........;)

I would never mix memory types, they tend to not flow together well if they arent at the exact same speed, and a different manufacturer...even if it is identical type of ram, arent going to run exactly the same

Nonsense!

Feel free to mix any memory you have. It will only be a problem if you are overclocking and even then you might not have a problem.

I have mixed a 256mb-PC133 stick with everything from a 32mb-PC100 stick to a 128mb-PC150 stick and everything in between and my systems have always run fine.

If you have any problems mixing your ram, it's not your ram's fault unless it's a bad stick of course.

I just bought one of those Crucial cas2 256mb-pc133 sticks and I know it won't have any problem mixing with my other non-l33t ram. ;)

I had 2 256mb sticks in and 1 128 meg stick in

PC133 - by different companies....

when i tried to take out the 128 and put in a new PC133 256 stick, i had problems where programs wouldnt run and i had to restart numerous times...nothing would work...

so i took out the new 256 and put back the 128 and everything works fine again....
they were all PC133 on the asus a7v motherboard....so sometimes mixing different brands does not work..

Dont be so certain of that. I ran a stick each of crucial and mosel(both top quality) at 144mz cas2 then back to 133 and had no end of bsod's and corrupted files that I couldn't pin on anything. They didn't get along, timing specs possibly or other issues but be aware that different models etc are not designed or tested to work together.
I lost a lot of data and reinstalled a lot of Windows over a month of frustration. Now the mosel is gone.

Yes, sometimes it will work, sometimes it works for a while, then you get corruption & errors and a big mess.......the safe bet is to try and stick with one type, one brand! I'm sure Pezdispenser, or whatever has very good luck with it the way it sounds, but, it's not a wise thing to do if you can avoid it and even the manufactures of the Motherboards will tell you this! Good Luck though! :)

Seriously dissed twice in this thread... :(

Try building some systems for a few years and then tell me I am wrong! I will not take crap from computer-newbies ignorant enough to question my earned knowledge. I speak from experience and not just from what I read on another messageboard! :|

I still say you can mix the ram. :)

People that don't build systems should refrain from guessing if stuff will work or not. :|

Don't think you want to EVEN go there son.........I'm quite confident that unless you work in an assembly plant I've built a few more than you since I graduated from Mizzou in '82! ;)

Cherry, you do know that most everybody on this board (except maybe the OT guys :)) builds systems don't you? I've built systems for 5 years now and work in an IT dept. and I say that while you should be able to mix memory, you nullify the advantage of getting high quality memory to mix with lower quality. Afterall a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link . . .

It SHOULD work as long as you run everything inside it's spec. People go out and buy memory upgrades all the time and stick them in oem machines with no name ram. I've had some really strange machines that were picky, but my T'bird machine will take almost anything.

i say to check on what chipset is on the PNY
if it is infineon or micron or no name brand
if it is infineon chip then buy other brand with infineon chipset,
if it's micron then get crucial
it doesn't matter on the brand of memory, it matter more on brand of the chipset
